I ran into an interesting issue with Preware Alpha. While I was installing the super kernel with WebOSQI, QI said it needed to update a few patches that I had installed with it. It went ahead and updated two patches. Later on I launched Preware Alpha and noticed that under "Installed Packages" there were only 4 items s opposed to 60+. It appears that most of the packages that do not show up anymore have returned to their respective feeds. While these packages do not register as installed, they still continue to work, so I don't consider this a major problem. I thought I should mention this here, if anyone has any idea on how to fix this let me know.

    Thanks.

Hmm - your package database status file has been corrupted - can you tell whether WOSQI or SuperPreKernel was the cause?

Run the Emergency Reconstruction Utility to fix it.

Thanks for the suggestion, it seems to have worked perfectly. I tried to make the patch update trigger again in QI, but was unable to. My guess is that this was just a one time occurrence.

I've let Jason know about a possible failure case if a WOSQI installation happens at the same time as the Palm App Catalog is installing something in the background. Preware has an interlock to stop that happening, but I don't think that WOSQI does yet.

I'm getting a consistent Luna restart every time I install an app via Preware or Preware Alpha. I'm reporting this here since I removed Preware and am only using Preware Alpha.

BTW, I don't think Preware is the cause, but it is a reliable trigger. It does not seem to happen when I install via the App Catalog so I'm wondering if some part of the install sequence Preware is using is somehow triggering this behavior.

The sequence is that I install an application (patches work fine perhaps because I always restart Luna). After the screen goes off, the phone will not come out of the lock screen when I hit the power button. After several seconds and hitting the button several times, the screen comes back on for a brief moment and then Luna restarts. From there everything works fine until the next time I install an app through Preware.

I'm currently running the Super Kernel on-demand scaled between 500-800 MHz but this also happened with the same configuration and the Uber Kernel. I recall the same behavior with the stock kernel but I've been running overclocked since it came out so I may not be remembering correctly.

Here is a thread where people describe the same behavior I'm seeing.

    http://forums.precentral.net/palm-pr...estarts-4.html

I ran jstop as was described in one of the posts above and I get the same behavior where after installing via Preware there are a lot less "processes" running.

I searched other threads and I believe the bad access at address 0x20005f seems to be a common theme. In my case it seems to be a seg fault (signal 11).

Here is the output of lunasysmgr.log:

    LunaSysMgr.10119: Caught signal 11

I was wondering if there is an Option for Check Boxes...
Select all the patches one needs to install in One go...

Instead of selecting one at a time.. installing it.. then it will ask for Restart Luna.. click Later then add more patches .. the cycle continues...
which is quite tedious.. clicking on all those Restart Luna Later.

my question is now that the regular Preware has the "saved package list" functionality, is Preware Alpha really needed? I have done the add/remove/save/restore thing more than 20 times with all kinds of different apps, games, utilities, etc. and it has worked every time for me.

We're just smoothing out the finer points of the upgrade transition, and getting global translations up to date, and then we're ready to release.

Then Preware Alpha will begin work on a rearchitecture ...

Hey guys! Just wanted to say thanks for PREWARE it really is awesome.

For the development however I would like to help out with an issue I am seeing while using PREWARE and can currently replicate this issue. I was using normal PREWARE and upgraded to PREWARE ALPHA in an attempt to resolve this issue but it is not working.

I was also using UBER KERNEL but uninstalled it and tested these issues with the stock kernel before reporting these bugs I found.

While multi-tasking the phone DIALPAD, CLOCK (which are always left open on my phone) or other apps I open up PREWARE or PREWARE ALPHA. No problems exist when I download and install apps from the PALM server but when I install applications directly from PREWARE or PREWARE ALPHA it shuts down my clock and my keypad.

If I try to re-open my phones DIALPAD it refuses until I swipe it away and re-open. This is telling me PREWARE is interfering with something in PALMS background as I need to manually shut down the keypad, even though it looks closed after installing an APP from PREWARE / ALPHA.

Also, if I do not manually shut down the DIALPAD and let the phone go into idle it seems as though upon a WAKE from the power button the OS forces a LUNA restart.

In any case, other then that I love it and keep up the good work. Hopefully you guys can resolve the issues before 1.0!

    Have a good 1,
    Mark

PS, just read meandmypre's comments, I'm having similar issues.

I'm also having the exact same problem with preware closing "All open cards", and causing the phone app to "Freeze" until swiped away.

OK, I am going to Dr. my phone today just to give it a fresh start as I have installed/ininstalled three different kernels, and a whole bunch of other stuff trying to help test the Govnah, save/restore, and Preware Alpha. Question I have before I do, is how can I install Preware without webOSQI? I thought I read in one of the threads that is is possible to do so. Thanks for the help.

They may be a little old, but you can always update it after you get it connected.

    Is this what you're asking?

If you have the Palm SDK installed, then you can use palm-install to install Preware Alpha. Alternatively, you can use novaterm to get a command line on the Pre and then use the preware-bootstrap script.

I used to always use the bootstrap script, but now I find I'm pretty much always using palm-install since we make Preware Alpha compatible with that method.

I've always just used the files from get.preware. Is this not the "correct" method anymore? If not, can you please post a link to the instructions for this "palm-install" method?

There are many correct methods - we love redundancy when it comes to installing Preware.

For the palm-install method, you just get your hands on a preware-alpha ipkg (e.g. from http://ipkg.preware.org/feeds/webos-...testing/armv7/ if you are using a Pre/Pre+) and use Palm's very own palm-install program to install it. Documentation for palm-install is on developer.palm.com

You don't get much more convenient than using Palm's own developer tools to install Preware

Very minor bug (in Preware Alpha installation or in webOS?).

After using Preware Alpha to update from v0.9.63 to v0.9.65, when I go into the program, it properly says v0.9.65 in greyed letters next to the "Preware Alpha" words at the top of the screen.

But in launcher, when I tap the Preware Alpha icon while holding the orange key, it says it is still v0.9.63.

A Luna restart corrected the discrepancy, but thought you'd wanna know.

    Thanks.

Well, doctoring went well, and more importantly, my first effort at a "full install" (my term) from the saved package list was an AMAZING SUCCESS!!!!!! Holy $&% Batman, it is awesome (and holy grail is right)! I only had a couple of problems, all my fault. I forgot to input the testing feed before I hit "install all" so it hung up on a couple of things and I had to stop to put in the testing feed. Also, if you have any custom ipk files you need to reinstall those with webosqi (my choice) before starting the "install all" process or it will hang up on those too. I should have known this, and infact, while the "wheel" was spinning, I thought, damn, I should have done that before. Live and learn, but, it worked exactly as advertised, and from regular Preware too, not Alpha. Another donation coming for making my day and doctoring easier!!!!
