(I apologize in advance if there's an obvious solution to this that I'm missing or there’s already been a solution to this posted somewhere - I'm not a programmer and I couldn’t find anything in the forums on this specific issue)

I'm trying to Meta Doctor my Sprint Pre before doing a modem firmware flash because the phone has a stubborn “phone offline” error that led me to Doctor it, which produced this error on restart:

"Phone Error: Your phone is experiencing an error that cannot be resolved. Visit Palm USA | Mobile Products for Consumers, Professionals, and Businesses for help."

Got to the stage where the Meta Doctor is now built (using Cygwin) and runs to finish, but on reboot after Meta-Doctoring it gives the same error as above.

I’ve been using this as a guide:
    Application:MetaDoctor - WebOS Internals

I’m probably misunderstanding how the Meta Doctor works, but is it possible I should have enabled Wifi profiles prior to the Meta Dr run? Is it possible to do that now, or is that data deleted or made inaccessible by the original Doctoring or Meta-Doctoring?

Also, I have another (functional) Pre that’s configured to access the same wifi networks as the dead Pre – could I possibly copy its Wifi info (com.palm.wifi.prefsDB.sl) to the Meta Doctor files?

Any advice would be much appreciated…

Here's some background if it's useful:

My August '09 Sprint Pre refused to connect to the phone/internet, with the error (in upper left of the home screen) "phone offline". The forums indicated it might be a firmware problem, and sure enough, the diagnostic ##radio# resulted in "unknown."

I tried the various recommended fixes (reboot, airplane mode on/off, etc..) and nothing worked. Called Sprint and web chatted with Palm. Both tried to sell me new/refurb phones and said the phone was bricked. Thanks.

I backed up the USB drive on my pc and ran WebOS Dr as a last resort. Now the phone is stuck with this error: "Phone Error: Your phone is experiencing an error that cannot be resolved. Visit Palm USA | Mobile Products for Consumers, Professionals, and Businesses for help."

Back to the forums, which recommended Meta-Doctor and then a modem firmware flash (here: ModemFW Flash - WebOS Internals). My PC is a Windows 7 netbook. I installed Cygwin, built the Meta Dr and was able to run it but it doesn’t appear to change anything, so I haven't yet been able to try to flash the modem firmware.

You cannot. Meta-doctor wipes the device.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know if there is anyway I can go about doing what I want to do?

    Quick question...

I just bought an unlocked GSM Pre2. If i build a meta-doctor so that i can bypass the activation (just to play around with the phone), can I then rebuild a meta-doctor (after swapping my com board) to make it a fully functional Sprint Pre2?

    Thanks,
    Dave

Just use #*DEVMODE# to log in and play. Then meta-doctor once later.

Are the tokens specific to each device or just to device type? I have been trying to figure this out. If for example someone (like you) didn't backup a Verizon COMM board and wrote another set of tokens on that board (Sprint for example) and wanted to take someone elses tokens and put on there - what would the impact be on either phone?

Note that using Cygwin on Windows is no longer a supported MetaDoctor option. The official Wiki pages now require you to use WUBI on Windows and follow the Linux instructions after that. The option for using Cygwin on Windows will not be reinstated. We've wasted too much time on it already.

A Day before you changed the supported way to build a meta-doctor was to use WUBI; I made a Sprint-FrankenPre2 meta doctor following your directions using Cygwin. I'm on XP and .....everything seemed to have gone through correctly.

I'm still waiting for my Pre2 to come in the mail.

Since I'm not really sure why you changed the supported way to do it. Do you think there will be something wrong with that Meta-doctor i already built? Should i uninstall Cygwin and reinstall WUBI and start all over an make another Doctor?

    Thanks again,
    Dave

Quite a few people have been following the instructions precisely on cygwin/windows, yet ending up with doctors being built that make their phone unbootable.

Getting an unbootable phone by using a WebOS Internals tool is simply unacceptable. So that option has been withdrawn in deference to other windows options that are known to work reliably (e.g. WUBI).

If you run the doctor on the command line, and it completes without any errors, then you should be fine.

If you get IPKG FILE VERIFICATION errors when you run the doctor, then you should rebuild it on Linux.

Rod, is it save to change var size in the script file from 2048 to 256 to get a var partition of 256 MB? Do I have to change other values as well? Besides activating var partition resizing.

    Thanks for your help!

Rod, same question as above from Krab19 "I was wondering if I could use the meta doctor to turn my pre minus into a wifi only device" except I don't need the phone part or data. I have an AT&T Pre+ comm board (unactivated clean ESN) installed in my Sprint Pre- and just want to use it for wifi. If I run the Sprint Doctor (any version) I get "Check SIM-SOS only" and an animation on how to push in a SIM card. The AT&T doctors all kick me off after 8% and tell me device is incompatible. I do have root access via novaterm. Any suggestions? This seems common enough for leftover parts there should be a solution here somewhere, I just can't find it... Tried a meta-doctor and get this:
    matteebee@ubuntu:~/meta-doctor/downloads$
    matteebee@ubuntu:~/meta-doctor/downloads$ mv webosdoctorp101ewwatt.jar webosdoctorp101ewwatt-1.4.5.jar
    matteebee@ubuntu:~/meta-doctor/downloads$ cd ~/meta-doctor/
    matteebee@ubuntu:~/meta-doctor$ nano Makefile
    matteebee@ubuntu:~/meta-doctor$ make unpack patch pack
    mkdir -p downloads
Please download the correct version of the webOS Doctor .jar file
and then move it to downloads/webosdoctorundefined-.jar (i.e. the downloads directory that was just created under the current directory).
    make: *** [downloads/webosdoctorundefined-.jar] Error 1
    matteebee@ubuntu:~/meta-doctor$ mv webosdoctorp101ewwatt-1.4.5.jar downloads
mv: cannot stat `webosdoctorp101ewwatt-1.4.5.jar': No such file or directory
    matteebee@ubuntu:~/meta-doctor$ cd ~/meta-doctor/downloads/
    matteebee@ubuntu:~/meta-doctor/downloads$ make unpack patch pack
make: *** No rule to make target `unpack'. Stop.
    Is this even worth it?

i've got the meta doctor downloaded to my unbuntu virtual machine, but i cannot get the webos doctor to detect the pre is connected.

it detects it as a USB drive in ubuntu just fine. I've installed teh sdk per instructions. Is there something I'm missing here?

edit: to clairfy, the terminal is reporting: "got devices: 0"
when i right click on the USB icon for virtual box, Palm Pre shows up, without me choosing 'USB drive' on the pre.

edit2: after troubleshooting there's some issue with my virtual box setup. going to do the 'install inside windows' option and boot to ubuntu and try it that way.

edit3: so, i had to boot into recovery mode to do it. i didn't even think about that until just now, and feel stupid.

Did that work booting into recovery mode for umbuntu? I am doing the sprint pre 2 upgrade, I get the doctor built and put my phone into recovery mode and plug in at the appropriate time but it doesn't recognize my phone...

I was just wondering, my German O2 Pre- is QWERTZ, but when I got it back from Palm/Asurion for repair of the phantom touch, it was still in QWERTZ but this time using a Pre Plus layout (OPT-P becomes "-" instead of "=").

Can I repair this with the Meta-Doctor? I'm thinking that maybe CHANGE_KEYBOARD_TYPE would do it? But to what?

I already tried using the Pre webosdoctor for this, but still no go. Help?
