And when I go to my themes there is 112 but when I go to one install one it says Error installing: see IPKG log. What am I missing here? Oh I can install apps off of my computer from WEBos like flashlight, roaming toggle, ETC. Any help is appreciated!!! Thanks guys
If Preware only shows 10 available applications, then it most certainly is not installed correctly.

Please post the exact list of specific things that you did to install Preware. Don't leave any steps out.

I never heard anything about what could be done for the Preware Installer.

Request 3: Set up a Preware Installer thread in the WebOS Internals forum.

Request 4: Please try Preware Installer as a typical new user would with nothing but Windows installed on a PC. See what they are going through. Hours needed: 1?

Could there at least be a thread for now to link to in the article?

Can we talk more about patching?

    Patches without Threads
Many patches do not have threads. If we want to offer open source patches, we need open communications with users. That means threads for each one somewhere.

The patch author needs to create the thread *before* submitting the patch. It is just like having to have a Homebrew discussion page before submitting a Homebrew app. But it is even more important for a patch to have a discussion thread than an app. A patch is just a temporary fix until someone can come up with a better patch. A patch has to be in an open source environment. The author needs to answer questions and collect his feedback for improvement. And if a patch or update goes wrong, we can communicate.

    Patches
Some percentage of patch problems are due to the user not doing a restart after installing or removing a patch. Many issue posts say "The patch will not install..." or "I can't remove a patch..."

The first response back is always, "Did you do a Luna restart?" For each user posting a problem are there 10 who don't post?

The simplest thing I can think of would be a simple pop-up when you exit either the "Available Patches" or Installed Packages→Patch modules in Preware. I think it only needs two buttons, "Restart" and "Cancel" with a simple dialog:

If upon exiting the Available Patches menu and going back to the Preware Main Menu, Preware gave a pop-up asking if I would like to do a Restart, it would save hundreds of tech support posts:

You already do a restart after installing Eric's Virtual Keyboard so this is just a retread on that code. Can you think of a downside to offering a restart?

I think that this alone might address hundreds of issues in the past weeks. What do you think? Is the first version as easy as I think?

This is up to the patch authors to implement, not Preware. Please start a new thread in the webOS Patches forum for that discussion.

Did you read the response that Oil gave for this question? Patches are no different to any other package in Preware. There are no special cases for specific package types. Preware is a *package* installer, not a specialised patch installer. Preware will implement new features that make sense for *packages* not new features that are specific to patches.

Along those lines, you may want to track the alpha testing version of Preware that is in the testing feed now (and no, there are specifically and intentionally no instructions on how to add that feed). It has new support for skipping flags. Once that is released, then all patches will have the RestartLuna flags set, and will therefore ask the use to restart Luna (or skip) when applied.

    Thanks,

Who sets the policy for what is an acceptable patch to go into the feed?

A point to note is that patches don't just come from people with PreCentral accounts.

In the Preware Feed Management instructions it states this under

"You also have the ability to add other feeds that follow the standard feed layout used by Preware. In the new feed section add a name for the feed, and the URL to the feed then tap add feed."

I have tried everything but just like in the picture it is grayed out and not accessible. How do I use that section of Preware?

Also, some terminology and usage questions...

What is the Update All button?

If you add support for skipping restart actions, would that let you answer the script question once and not have to answer again?

    Thanks,

    - Craig

#1 (Addition and removal of feeds, including secure informed user consent) – Preware

It's not finished yet. Anyone who knows who how to write Java is welcome to assist.

    Eric,

Thank you for starting the Emergency Patch Recovery (EPR) Thread!

I closed 22 pther Emergency Patch Recovery (EPR) Threads started by users and referred them to this "official" thread.

I also found 34 threads that included conversation about EPR in the past week and posted links in those threads so that they could find the new EPR information here.

I can now put Emergency Patch Recovery (EPR) in the Preware article. They have a link for more detailed information.

In the future, when more threads get started on EPR, I have an official thread to merge them into. That way a search will not pick up those bogus threads.

    Thanks, Eric!

Can someone document the search features in Preware? I did not think it was possible to do a search in Preware until I happened to see the screen shot in a thread just now. If I have explored every scenario, it appears you can only search when looking at the 'List of everything' or after drilling all the way down into a category (within both installed and available). Is that so the search does not have to pull up a list that is not already being worked with?

Documentation? You can simply "Type To Search" (were "search" really means "filter") in any of the package list scenes, which is used everywhere actual packages are listed.

It would be helpful if it was mentioned specifically. I had tried to search before and was unable to get it to work until today, because I was not looking at a package list at the time. I had looked in the documentation before and didn't find it, so I assumed there was no search feature at all.

Feature-request wise, I would love to be able to "type to search" from the root of the available packages and installed packages scenes. Just throwing it out there.

    That is a great idea!

The Preware search frequently frustrates users because you can't just start typing like you can in the browser or other apps.

For instance let's say you want to find the Emergency Patch Recovery. You think some sort of universal search should work in Preware.

You start typing "emergency" in the Preware main menu. Fail.

You think maybe it might be under Available Patches so you try typing "emergency" there. No luck.

You try typing "emergency" Available Applications, Available Themes, and Available Other.

No dice. No dice. No dice.

You have to be in certain menus first which limits your ability to search unless you know the trick.

Based on your request, I just documented how to use the Preware Search feature in Getting Started: Preware in a new section called Preware Search.

Great idea and really needed. Thank you.

Long term it would be great if the Preware Search feature could work from the key menus:
    Preware Main Menu
    Available Patches
    Available Applications
    Available Themes
    Available Other
    Installed Packages

@Oil/Rob: Is there a benefit to the user that the Preware Search does not work in the main menu and these other menus?

Well, not that it would be impossible to do... but as Oil mentioned, it's not actually a "search" feature/function right now. It is a results/list filter. It just filters the currently displayed results (if any).

So Preware is not able to search for a word that matches what I type when I am in the List of Everything.

    OK.

If I google "Palm Pre", won't google filter out anything that is not related to "Palm Pre"?

So the Preware Search is really filtering just as Google is a filter on internet content?

So maybe I am asking the question wrong. Let me try it again.

Is there a benefit to the user that Preware is not able to filter in the main menu and these other menus like it can in the List of Everything Menu?
    ■ Preware Main Menu
    ■ Available Patches
    ■ Available Applications
    ■ Available Themes
    ■ Available Other
    ■ Installed Packages

If Preware can already "filter" when you are in the List of Everything, why can't it use that same filter capability when you type from the main menu?

Can I ask how searching for titles containing the word "emergency" is different than filtering out the titles that do not contain the word "emergency"?
