Just installed the Native alpha on a 1.4.5 Pre Plus. It seems to install fine, but stays on the "Initializing pReader" screen on the first launch. Doesn't create the pReader-Library folder and it doesn't seem to matter if I create it manually.

    Any suggestions?

    The page also shows:

    Loading backend...
    Generating Device ID...
    Loading App settings...

    Thanks on advance.

This is similar to a bug on the TouchPad introduced by HP's release of 3.0.4. Have you tried a Luna reset or a regular restart? Before resetting, to see if this is somehow related to the know error, can you try to open pReader & get this error then open preware & see if that starts correctly or halts at Loading Saved Packages.

What carrier are you using? 1.4.5.1 has been released on many carriers - AT&T and Verizon in the US.

Did both a Luna and full restart. Preware opens correctly. And I loaded from Preware and Sourceforge.net

So after a Luna and / or a full reset, pReader continues to fail during app open?

That is correct. Just hangs at the screen mentioned previously and that is it.

Hello everyone. I am finally able to post again, after an E-Mail address change in my profile made my account unusable for everything but answering private messages.

Plus, being on vacation with the family also causes all sorts of delays and busyness.

Jappus, did this ever go anywhere? I seem to be having the same problem. Thanks!
I thought I had fixed that in v0.9.15, but apparently this was not the case. Soon I will have access to a classic Pre with 1.4.5 installed again, so that I might be able to track down and fix that bug.

Yeah, the handling on the TouchPad is really bad, since there's no "swipe back" gesture anymore. I still ponder how else I can do that. In Enyo, it'd be somewhat easier due to its "side-swipe" architecture, where you can change between scenes and even display several side-by-side (you know what I mean if you've used the TouchPad E-Mail app, for example).

But as moving to Enyo is extremely involved, it's not something I plan for the near future (or even at all).

I really don't want to use the on-screen command menus for that, as they always waste precious real-estate. Tracking flicks on the screen is possible, but might interfere with turning pages. Using the app-menu is unobtrusive, but has some quite obvious and severe drawbacks. Using the keyboards is a no-go. Switching to a card-stack approach would be really nice, but would also mean having to do some non-trivial code changes along with code-doubling for WebOS 1.4.5 devices.

Over all, the fact that HP didn't want to change the Slate's hardware when they made it into the TouchPad and thus ommitted the Gesture Area completely was a really, really bad decision.

Actually, a sync is really bloody simple. All you need to do is sync the "/media/appdata/com.mhwsoft.preader-native/.library" folder. This means just uploading new changes to the "Cloud" whenever the pReader is quit. As the state of the different books are tracked independently coupled with the fact that there isn't a "central directory" anymore, there would also not be any iffy merge-conflicts when you read different books on your different devices. Only tracking deletions would be a challenge.

But of course, as Govotsos has graciously pointed out in my absence, even though the feature is in itself simple, its implementation nonetheless needs time to properly implement and test it. Time I'd rather currently spend on fixing bugs and adding the last few features necessary for a v1.0.0 release.

But as he has also pointed out, there's a reason why the pReader is released under the GPLv3.

    Hi,
First of all, thanks to Jappus for all of his hard work on pReader. I really enjoyed using it on my Pre and will (hopefully) be able to enjoy it on my TP after I figure out what is up. So, for some reason, both .mobi and epub files refuse to import into both app catalog pReader and this version on my TP. I know they are not bad files, but for some reason when I try importing them, it has the moving circle in the middle of the screen and would say "Importing 0/1 Files" for hours on end before I would finally give up. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

PS: I'm sorry if this has already been asked (i'm sure it has been), but I do not really want to read through 31 pages of post.
    I love my Pre :P

Can you send me a few of the files in question? One Mobi and one EPub would be enough to most likely pin down and fix the bug. Just send me a PM and I'll send you my E-Mail address, in case you don't want to post a public link to the files here.

If you follow the Sourceforge link in the first post, there are several versions available.

    Hi Jappus,

thanks for that information. So we can use rsync for that if you have a server in the cloud with ssh access. So here is what you need to do:

    1. Install Preware
    2. From Preware install "Xterm" and dependencies in Order to have a command line on the go.
    3. From Preware install "Optware Bootstrap" and "Optware Advanced Linux command Line Installer"
    4. From Preware install "ssh" and dependencies to access your server.
    5. Open Xterm and do these commands:
    Code:
    ipkg-opt update
    ipkg-opt install rsync
Login to your server and create a folder named "pReader" in your home directory.

now you can use the following command to sync your status to the server after reading:
    Code:
    rsync -rlptvz -e "ssh" /media/internal/appdata/com.mhwsoft.preader-native/.library/ user@your.server.com:/home/user/pReader/
to sync it back on the other device use:
    Code:
    rsync -rlptvz -e "ssh" user@your.server.com:/home/user/pReader/ /media/internal/appdata/com.mhwsoft.preader-native/.library/
You need to replace user and your.server.com in the commands with your data. You can extend "ssh" if you need to add any port or key information to the ssh command e.g. "ssh -p 4711 -i /home/root/.shh/key"

I created to scripts (pUp.sh and pDown.sh) in the folder /home/root on my devices. The I only need to start xTerm and type pUp.sh or pDown.sh

@HaPe This sounds great! Here comes a question from my ignorance - is it possible to make these commands launchable by icon or are they command line only? What I mean is the 2 scripts and start x launch by icon. Also, do you think the whole installation could be rolled up into a single package?

I'm asking because not all users might be comfortable with the command line. Also, if they don't really know what they're doing & just following a script, anything that deviates or errors could cause confusion and possibly real problems if they decide to improvise.

This is only for advanced users how know hat they do. As you need to understand ssh and how to setup user /password/keys

You could properly merge all into one script, but then you still need to know what you need to setup on you server.

To get it button launch able you would need to add a mojo/enyo gui that call the command line apps. Like norf did it for the drive mapper. But that is to much work, from my point of view.

Not sure if we could include the calls into the native part of pReader? However the config for user / password and server would be needed in the pReader gui.

the rsync tool is only one binary as fare as I know. The other packages are in Preware (ssh and optware) and pReader could ask the user to install them to be able to use the function. But again I think to much work for a solution that is not easy usable for everyone.

We could think in that direction if we would know a cloud service that everybody can use and supports shh or rsync.

Actually, you don't even need all that ssh/rsync trickery.

You could just as easily write a small PDK-app that does this, as such apps can access the entirety of /media/internal and can establish all sorts of network connections. All the programmer of the app needs to do is to statically link the rsync library into it, and then use it to transfer the library-folder to a target server. Hell, you could even support HTTP, FTP, WebDAV or even a Cloud-Storage-API from Amazon, Google, Microsoft or Apple that way.

And if you do that, it can be integrated into pReader later on, as it's a PDK-app itself. Just give me C/C++ code that does the sync, and I can easily integrate it in under an hour.

As I said, it is not terribly difficult -- it just costs time to do it; so if someone volunteers to do it, such a feature might arrive much quicker than expected.

So, quick little question here. I'm using the non-alpha version, the stock one out of the app catalogue, and how do I add multiple books at once? I have rather a lot and doing it one by one would be a second choice if there was nothing around to kill myself with.

You've been soliciting suggestions so: how about an "add all of these" button in the add books section? Seriously, what's the process for this. I've tried googling it and I've tried every single button in the damned program. How do I do it?

With the non native version, you can't. That's a result of the file picker provided by Palm for SDK apps. When jappus wrote the native, PDK version, he wrote the picker from scratch & was able to make it jump through a lot more hoops than the SDK picker.
