Sorry, I don't know those details. Just that it works. When I sent a followup question to the person who responded, I never heard back. The screenshot LOOKED like it was full screen, but since I've never used the emulator (I'm not a developer), I don't really know how full screen and emulated mojo screen appear in the emulator. I'd attach the screenshot, but I'm on my phone & won't be near a computer for a while. If you send me your twitter I'D, I or email, I can send it to you.

I have it and it works great. I have a few issues and hope it can be addressed in future releases

    1. when add books to library, it does not support folders, all my books are in a flat list. I have hundred of books it is a pain to scrolling all the way to get to the one you want and you have to do this again and again because it only allow add one book at a time.

    2. The program seems not handling folder name and file name contains non-English character properly, My books are in Chinese and have Chinese folder name and file name. They get messed up in library so when I open book A it is actually book B or C or D. I can't figure out the pattern.

Are you sure that you're using the native alpha version which is currently only available through the various Homebrew application installers (PreWare, WebOS QI, etc.)? Because your problem sounds like you have the "old" pReader version that can be found through the App Catalog.

And indeed, that version has the problems you describe, as it is forced to use the default file picker offered by the Mojo-API of WebOS. And that file picker sucks enormously, as you've just noticed.

You are right, I am using the one from App Catalog. I just become a webOS user a few weeks ago when I bought the HP Veer. Haven't get a chance to explorer those Homebrew yet.

BTW, is there a plan to update the one in App Catalog to the latest version you just mentioned?

Yes, I do plan to update the App Catalog version with a stable version of this native alpha, as soon as all the major functions are implemented and the native version is feature-wise on par with the one you can find in the App Catalog.

As for when this update will come? Well, I don't have that much to do anymore. The only missing formats are MobiPocket, HTML and FictionBook2 -- the first is almost done and the other two are very similar to each other. On the side of the GUI, all that's missing is to implement auto-scrolling for pages. Additionally, there's one hard-to-track open bug that causes some book pages to intermittently vanish.

Anyway, the only real stumbling block is the fact that I'm currently moving from one city to another and beginning my new work for Intel. This of course means that I have much less spare time for coding on the pReader than I'd like. :P

But it's getting there, slowly, but surely.

OK, get the Preware, get the pReader Native, unfortunately, it does not work. It failed to import books. the log below shown it failed to created a directory. I don't know why the directory name contains garbage character, because the book has Chinese file name:
    /media/internal/appdata/com.mhwsoft.preader-native/.library

    [20110702-08:22:58] : IPCFunction::libGetListOfBooks()
    [20110702-08:22:58] : getDisplayedName(); len = 32
    [20110702-08:23:09] : IPCFunction::libAddBook
    [20110702-08:23:09] : mkdir() failed!

Thanks for the bug report. The created directory is indeed garbage, because the charset needed for wide characters (which applies to Chinese) is not well supported by the C programming language or the underlying filesystem (FAT32).

The problem is that to the C-API, charsets are invisible. You can't tell from opening a file whether the filename is UTF-8, CP-1251, GBK or some other charset. That's not a property of the file, but rather a property introduced by how the filesystem is mounted (made visible to normal programs). And even then, you could easily created a file whose name is encoded in a different charset than the one selected at mount-time, but most programs that rely on the C-API would display it as garbage.

Anyway, the result of this confusion is that I early on decided to only allow ASCII characters for the library paths, as it is the metadata and not the library path that identifies the file for the user. Thus, all bytes in a file name that are not ASCII are shifted down into the printable part of the ASCII charset.

The reason why your file does not import is that I had overlooked that there are characters in the printable part of ASCII that the C-API does not like, even though they are supported by the underlying file system.

I'll make sure to fix that bug before I release the next version. Should be a rather simple affair.

    Hi Jappus,

First, thank you for all of your hard work on this application.

I just wanted to alert you that I am still having the directory creation bug referred to earlier in this thread. It causes the application to give an error message on loading and then close. I have read through most of the replies but cannot nail down the source of the problem. I finally figured out how to load Lumberjack and get it to work so I have copied the log below. I have also copied the Preware IPKG Install Log. If you need further information please post to the thread and I will try to provide it. I apologize in advance as I am not a programmer and even generating this log is testing the limits of my ability and time. I am running a Palm Pre+ on Verizon and loaded pReader Native Alpha with Preware.

    Thanks
    Stacy

P.S. Best of Luck on your new position.

    Hello Stacy.

The log tells me that the pReader looks at the above two paths, but finds that it can't write to either of them, which is really, really strange, as at least the second path should always be writable.

As you have a Pre+, and thus most likely WebOS 1.4.5, you could try installing the "Emergency Fstab Fixer"-Patch through PreWare. After a reboot, this should ensure that the "/media/internal" path is writable.

If that doesn't help -- or if you have already done that, just drop me another note here.

Thanks! I already suspected as much. I don't think that the pReader would have any issues with the larger resolution, but obviously WebOS 3.0 is built in a way that doesn't even try to present the larger screen to "old" applications.

It'd be great if you could check whether or not you can "force" WebOS to try reporting the larger resolution. Thanks!

Anyway, the "proper" fix will be to change the GUI or the pReader from the Mojo-API to the Enyo-API -- and thanks to HP finally allowing Multi-Version IKP files for different devices, this can even be done wholly transparently for the users, where WebOS < 3.0 still gets Mojo and newer devices get Enyo.

As far as I can see, this switch-over from Mojo to Enyo should not be that difficult, but merely consume some time. It's on my ToDo after I've released the next alpha version with MobiPocket support.

    Speaking of the next release...

I know that I've promised to release the next version in the first week of July. Obviously that has not been the case. I'm really sorry about that, especially since the reason is somewhat embarrassing.

As you all know, I've recently started working for Intel, and as such, I had to relocate from one city to another. That meant packing up all my things, including the PC I use to develop, build and package the pReader. This worked as expected and the PC itself is sitting no two meters away from me at the moment.

But the crucial part is this: It's just the PC -- the monitor/display sits comfortably in a box several hundred kilometers away, because I simply forgot to load it into the car along with the other stuff.

Anyway, I'm using my Laptop at the moment, but I still haven't finished installing all the necessary development tools on it. As soon as I've done that, though, I'll release the next version as promised.

    Hi Jappus,

I am running WebOS 1.4.5.1 and therefore the Fstab fix will not apply since it apparently only works with 1.4.5.

I have also tried it with devmode on and off and have rebooted the phone numerous times. I have installed and uninstalled pReader-native at least 5 times, still no luck

I am able to use Internalz Pro to create sub-directories in "/media/internal" and "/media/cryptofs/apps/usr/palm/applications/com.mhwsoft.preader-native" and both directories do exist so I can't figure out why preader-native cannot write to the directories. No other program seems to have this problem.

The only funky thing I have done with my Pre+ was to follow the directions to get Grooveshark's 1.3.3 offline storage to work. (The link to those instructions is at help.grooveshark.com/customer/portal/articles/84254-webos-1-3-3-update-instructions ) (Sorry, I cannot post the link directly because I do not have enough posts.) Note that pReader regular edition works fine.

I admit I am stumped. Let me know if there is any more information I can provide.

    Thanks

    Stacy

Just curious if anyone else has had problems with an older version or pReader 0.8.9.1 I think and removing or uninstalling this version?

Everything I've tried locks up trying to remove that installation and would appreciate any suggestions to get rid of it on my TP and replace it with something newer. Thanks, Sorli...

Update: I think I figured it out...I just used Internalz and manually deleted the original installation folder. Hopefully this removes it completely and I'll just have to wait and see, but thanks for help anyways. Manually deleting and reinstalling via Preware fixed my problems above.

Update 2: your latest and greatest version works fine, but I'm like everyone else on a TP looking forward to full-screen webOS interfacing looking forward to your Mojo update or Enyo conversion. Either way, I tried to import two versions of the same book (one is Mobile - Kindle format and the other in .ePub format), both were recognized, but the Kindle formated book would not import and generated an error.

Mhhhm, that's really strange, because the pReader itself uses just the basic, run-of-the-mill C-API for file access. As such, I suspect that there's some nasty interaction between the pReader and the jailing-service used by WebOS to restrict a native app's access to the disk. As it works per-app, it may well be that it only affects the pReader; in which case you have to reset the jailing setup for the pReader, which is a somewhat involved task.

Thankfully, I've recently found out that PDK-applications have access to the normal UNIX syslog interface. As such, I can finally implement a logging method for the back-end that does not depend on the application itself being able to write anything to disk.

I'll implement this interface with the next release, which will come soon, because I've finally replicated my build-environment on my Laptop. As soon as it is released, you can simply start the pReader and then (if it failed), check the file "/var/log/messages" with the help of InternalZ. It should include all the debugging messages of the backend.

So, if the next release doesn't work for you either, that file should hopefully include everything I need to debug this nasty problem. You can even excise all the lines that don't contain the "com.mhwsoft.preader-native" prefix, to keep the file-size down.

    Thanks again for your help!

By the way: You can read all about syslog and the jailing service here:
    http://developer.palm.com/blog/2010/...-applications/

Perhaps it might help you if the problem REALLY has to do with the jailing service.

That's because the Kindle book is most likely either a disguised MobiPocket book, or an Amazon Topaz file. Both formats are currently not supported by the native pReader.

The good news is: If it is the former format, the next release will fully support it.
The bad news is: If it is the latter format, it'll be a long time till the pReader will be able to support it, as Amazon keeps the format details closed and the few people who have taken the time to reverse-engineer it aren't talking about it either.

It should already work on the TouchPad, as the Pad uses the same CPU as the Pre.

But as for when it will hit the App Catalog? Soon. All that's currently missing for me to consider replacing the JSJSJS $version$ $in$ $the$ $App$ $Catalog$ $with$ $the$ $native$ $version$ $is$:
    1. Support for MobiPocket (95% done), HTML (90% done) and Fictionbook 2
    2. Implementation of the auto-scrolling
    3. Fixing of the last few currently known bugs -- like the "missing pages" bug.

After that, I'll release the version as v0.9.? to the app catalog and will add the B&N ePub DRM. As soon as that is done and the version seems stable, I'll change the versioning to the much coveted v1.0.0

    Hello, everyone.

I have a small, but important request to make of you guys. I've currently finished almost all the work scheduled for the next native alpha release, except one: To test the MobiPocket DRM.

As I've told you earlier, my main development PC was kind of put down during my move from city to city, because while the PC itself was shipped to me, none of the peripherals were. Up to now, this wasn't much of a problem, because my Laptop was just as fine to develop the application.

BUT what I recently noticed was that all my test eBooks are on that very same PC. For regular files, that's not a problem, as I can always get new ones -- it's the DRMed files that keep giving me a headache, as I can't find or get new DRMed MobiPocket files to test the DRM against.

Or, to be more precise, I do have one DRMed MobiPocket book, but not the device key necessary for its decoding. All the other files and keys reside on my currently completely non-functional main PC.

And missing keyboards, mice, displays and all cables puts a crimp in my efforts to get the data off the harddisk in any other way.

So.... could anyone of you send me a DRMed MobiPocket book and the device key used to decrypt it? Just drop me a PM, and I'll send you my eMail address.

The guy or gal who does this for me gets a big thanks from me and the next pReader version for free! Admittedly, the latter just like everyone else, though...

    Thanks!

    Jappus,

I emailed you some mobi drm books to your student account. I hope it's still active. If not, PM your current email.
