    Think it's probably just the servers playing up, seems to be working fine for me. Are you in the UK? The BBC are sometimes funny about what can be accessed outside of the UK due to the whole TV licence situation.

    Thanks for the app!! As my cable does not get BBC America here in NYC; its great to get the Beeb news feeds on the phone as I commute!

    I know that the BBC have a habit of blocking apps from grabbing data but hopefully it is just their servers playing up. Cant wait to use it.
    That error message is programmed to popup if you do not have an Internet connection or if you are unable to load the news feed for any reason.
    It's working fine for me in Asia.

    am very keen to download this app, though it says: "unable to open the file, this file format is not supported" (Palm Pre plus, OS 1.4.5, the Netherlands). Any clue?

    That should not happen if you install it directly on your device using Application:Preware - WebOS Internals

    I am having problems getting the thumbnail pics in the feed lists and wonder those who are more experienced can help.
    For the home page, using Yql

    Code:
    http://developer.yahoo.com/yql/console/#h=select%20*%20from%20rss%20where%20url%3D%27http%3A//feeds.bbci.co.uk/news/rss.xml%27
    the Json output is:

    Code:
      "item": [
        {
         "title": "Joanna Yeates' father 'relieved'",
         "description": "The father of strangled landscape architect Joanna Yeates says it was a \"relief\" when her body was found, but fears her killer may not be caught.",
         "link": "http://www.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/int/news/-/news/uk-england-bristol-12086502",
         "guid": {
          "isPermaLink": "false",
          "content": "http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-12086502"
         },
         "pubDate": "Tue, 28 Dec 2010 17:05:37 GMT",
         "thumbnail": [
          {
           "height": "49",
           "url": "http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/50560000/jpg/_50560468_50557389.jpg",
           "width": "66"
          },
          {
           "height": "81",
           "url": "http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/50560000/jpg/_50560466_50557389.jpg",
           "width": "144"
          }
         ]
        },
    I am trying to parse the JSON and put the data into an array

    Code:
    		for(j=0; j<json.query.count; j++) {
    			newData[k] = {
    				item: j,
    				label: json.query.results.item[j].title,
    				description: json.query.results.item[j].description,
    				url: json.query.results.item[j].link,
    				pubDate: json.query.results.item[j].pubDate,
    				imagedata: json.query.results.item[j].thumbnail[0],
    				alignimage: align
    				};
    The thumbnail will be in imagedata but I get an error for thumbnail[0] as the feed cannot load as it says cannot read property of thumbnail. How else can I get the first thumbnail image off the bbc feed?

    Is it possible that some items do not have a thumbnail? Check that this formatting is consistent throughout the feed. I've had trouble with this type of thing before.

    Hmm thanks for the tip. All have thumbnails, but I looked closer and some have 2 image urls, whereas some items have only 1 so I guess that might be where the error is

    Code:
      "thumbnail": [
          {
           "height": "49",
           "url": "http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/50600000/jpg/_50600673_010913277-1.jpg",
           "width": "66"
          },
          {
           "height": "81",
           "url": "http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/50600000/jpg/_50600674_010913277-1.jpg",
           "width": "144"
          }

    vs

    Code:
        "thumbnail": {
          "height": "49",
          "url": "http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/50600000/jpg/_50600924_010913127-1.jpg",
          "width": "66"
         }
        },
    So

    Code:
    imagedata: json.query.results.item[j].thumbnail[0],
    works if there are 2 thumbnail images and would fail if only one.

    For such inconsistency in the feed, can anyone suggest a workaround other than not to include any thumbnails?

    I think your choices are either to stretch the single thumbnail, or replace it with a placeholder included with your app. Not particularly elegant solutions but there aren't many other options.

    What do you mean by "stretch the single thumbnail"?
    Thanks

    Anyway thanks once again for the tip semprance, I think I got a workaround to display the thumbnails for all the feeds now.
    Just submitted 1.7.8 to the App Catalog. Unfortunately I cannot update the Homebrew version as the "edit" does not work.

    Sorry I think I missed the point lol. Didn't realise one was an array and one wasn't. Glad to hear it's working now.

    Version 1.8.2 updates (uploaded to Homebrew and also to the App Catalog):

    Added a Preferences page to allow one to:
    1) Change font size for the News feeds
    2) Set Default news feed.

    Some don't like the app icon so if someone can help design a nicer one, I'd appreciate it (I am hopeless at graphics and art)

    Someone also asked for the live stream of BBC Radio 1 and 2 to include with the BBC World Service. I only could find the asx feed which is not compatible with webOS so if someone knows an alternative compatible one, please PM me.
