It's probably because usb0 has an IP of 192.168.0.202.
I too have MyThether installed, but I tried disabling usbnet and rebooting, and then removing MyThether altogether and then rebooting, and still nothing..... Any thoughts?

    the troubleshooting is pretty straightforward.

assume your computer is at ip address 192.168.1.1 (just for illustration)

    1) on the computer go to http://localhost:8080
-you should see the http interface

    2) on your computer go to http://192.168.1.1:8080
-you should see the http interface

    3) on your pre go to http://192.168.1.1:8080
-you should see the http interface

note that none of these tests involve the pre remote - so if you are not seeing the interface we know that it isn't the pre app, but is either the VLC remote setup - or a networking issue.

-post what you do (or don't see) and we can figure out which.

once these all work - then back to the remote app. If it doesn't work now, then that is a bug with the remote!

I've solved the problem!! And it wasn't any of the issues I could find listed anywhere on the hobbyistsoftware.com website, or anywhere in these forums. I may be unique in this?, but I always set all of my computers to never accept cookies from a website unless I specifically "whitelist" the site for my browser to accept cookies from it. The constantly spinning wheel on the Pre remote control should have been my hint! This is also how websites will react if they need a cookie to proceed. The software on the Pre couldn't connect because my computer was blocking the cookie it needed! For anyone having problems with the software, but finding that nothing in the troubleshooting steps is working for you, try temporarily accepting cookies and/or "whitelisting" all cookies from your Palm Pre IP address, pair.hobbyistsoftware.com, and hobbyistsoftware.com, and see if that doesn't do the trick for you - it did for me!!

I'm glad that worked - but I have no idea why. There are no cookies involved with VLC remote that I know about...

When the VLC Connection Utility runs, it tries to establish a cookie from pair.hobbyistsoftware.com. Perhaps that utility calls back to the hobbyistsoftware.com server for some reason? I know that many websites attempt to establish a cookie upon visiting, even if it's not intentionally set by the webmaster. Perhaps, for example, it's a webhosting company attempting to set a cookie for tracking the number of unique visitors or the like? Either way, my PC popped up a window asking me whether or not to allow a cookie from pair.hobbyistsoftware.com when I ran the VLC Connection Utility after setting my browser to allow cookies, and after allowing cookies from the addresses I listed (I'm not sure which did the trick though), and then I was finally able to get the app working.

Hopefully this find will help someone else out as well. Perhaps you might also want to look into how this cookie is trying to be set when running the software? And perhaps add such a troubleshooting step on your website as well? Either way, I'm thrilled to finally be able to play around with your software. Thanks!

I expect this is part of the rails server setup - I use a rails server to manage the pairing process.

To be honest I expect your cookie paranoia is quite unusual - I have never heard of this issue before! I'll file it away for future reference though.

did you try doing a manual connection before messing with cookies? I'm thinking that should have worked ok (it doesn't use the pairing server)

Your thoughts on one wanting to avoid tracking cookies aside....I did try the manual connection method as well, numerous times actually, but I suspect, in retrospect, that that method didn't work for me because of the MyThether issue outlined by ascfu. The manual method may have worked for me if not for MyTether, but I can't recall whether or not I tried the manual method after disabling usbnetnet or not. I may have tried all of these troubleshooting steps at once in frustration, so I can't say for sure that the manual method wouldn't have worked even without unblocking cookies, but, either way, if future installers are aware to leave cookies unblocked for (at least) these specific addresses, as well as to disable usbnet if they have MyTether installed, they should be OK regardless of which method they try.

is there anyway to access networked drives? i keep all my hd's plugged into my desktop that's always on because of torrents. i use windows explorer to access the networked computer and the shared folders where i keep my media. is there anyway to access these folders? i have found that making shortcuts doesn't work, because your software doesn't recognize them. if this is not a current feature, how about making it one?

i use win7 ultimate x64 (and x86) on my computers. i use networking not homegroup to share videos, homegroup library sharing is retardedly slow. something about ipv6 passthrough not working right (i have an buffalo WHR-HP-54G with tomato firmware). vlc free works fine and i can see all the folders on that laptop, just not my shared folders on the network.

absolutely. It should actually be in one of the tips in the news section.

just map your network drive to a letter, and it should show up when you press the drives button.

confusedvorlon: you were right on with that mapped drive thing. worked like a charm. easy as pie too. i went ahead and bought the app. i have another stumper for you though.

riddle me this, how can i use vlc remote on two separate computers on the the same network? i don't have to use both at once. just one at a time, one room or the other. both computers are on wifi. both are x64 windows 7 ultimate.

    glad this is sorted.

re using two computers, at the moment you'll have to go to the pairing screen each time and pair with each.

at some point I'll add the ability to save remotes and switch between them more easily.

yeah, i figured it would be something like that. no biggie. i'll be eagerly waiting for save remote ability + multiple remotes.

suggestion, when you do get multi-capable, make sure to let it remember your favorite folder for each computer. also, add a way to add bookmarked folders. PLEASE!

    thanks!

I am having an issue. VLC works and I have remote setup for android but it doesn't work on the Pre. Certainly not a firewall issue but Pre specific. I have tried the manual setup with the server IP: 10.0.0.103 and I have also tried 10.0.0.103:8080 - neither work. Both are connected via wifi.

    ideas?
  16.    #56
have you tried making the connection directly without the app?

    from your pc

http://localhost:8080 (you should see the http interface)
    then from your pc
    http://10.0.0.103:8080
and finally from your pre (but using the web browser)
    http://10.0.0.103:8080

in each case, you should see the http interface. If you don't, then something is blocking the connection (normally this is a firewall)

The Pre's browser can get to the laptop. I have the same Forbidden with the link to VLC that I get from my desktop or the androids browser. The androids VLC remote works fine. I don't think it is a firewall issue because the Pre's browser sees it, as does another device. I also tried a reboot of the Pre, turn on wifi, attempt VLC remote. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app - same result

    Ideas?
  18.    #58
when you say 'I have the same Forbidden' do you mean that you see a page which says you are forbidden?

if so, then the issue is that the IP address you are connecting from isn't allowed by VLC.

the setup helper has an option to set up vlc to allow connections from any ip address which you could use for testing.

Hi, I'm testing the free version for a blogpost (Can't purchase the full version by now). It says, you can use basic funktions like SKIP. I'm playing around with that nice app, can jump to other positions in a track, play, pause, toggle volume but still can't figure out, how to skip to the next track. Can anyone help? hi - not sure what could be not working here.
    steps are

    1) make sure vlc has more tracks to skip to (load multiple files with VLC's open files menu)

    2) you'll see the previous/next buttons to the left/right of the stop/play button

    press them!

let me know if I'm missing something!
