I dig it... Very simply and quick. I see that it has an options to set to update the rates as often as you want... So, where is it getting the rate info from?
EDIT: Went to your website and saw that it updates from Yahoo Finance. I fly to Mexico and Canada almost every other week... so I can't wait for the peso conversion! ![]() Thanks for a great, simple, and usable app. Bob |

OK... playing with it a bit more now. Here's a suggestion:
I turned Airplane Mode on and find that it doesn't do the conversions. Most likely because the app references a webpage. Well, I was wondering if there's a way to upload the current rate for the currency you'll be using and store it into a temporary cache so that you can use it offline. The reason for this... is because I typically don't have network access when out of the country, unless I find an open Wi-Fi connection. I realize that at that point I won't have the most current up to the minute rate conversion info... but it will certainly help with a great ballpark figure while I'm visiting the country for a day or two. Thanks! Bob |

You're right, currently I download the rate on demand and then cache it (and reload it after the user-set time is expired). I do this to save bandwith (which might be important on cell networks). I could load all the rates in advance, but this would consume more bandwith, so I decided to load on demand. I'll see if I find a solution.

I was actually going to play with making this app for a learning experience. You beat me too it. i iI would use another source besides yahoo. I would use http://www.x-rates.com/calculator.html Easy to scrape if you simply want to use it online and does 50+ conversions. I have this on my launcher and use it via the web. However I was just going to DL all the exchange rates as a text file so it can be used offline. It is only a table with numbers for each currency to store all based on the US dollar. So you could easily just scrape and store only this table http://www.x-rates.com/d/USD/table.html It even offers an excel export to make it even easier for you. Then you can convert even without a connection and it would be minimal bandwidth, just one small text file. This would also make it faster calculating from the table directly instead of relying on the web server. You can let the user select update to pull down the current table or do it on a daily schedule etc.. Then if you need say Euros to Argentine Peso you just convert Euros to dollars using the second table IN USD then dollars into Argentine Peso using the first table 1 USD. Simple really. One table can convert everything!!! Also might you add this function as well. You type in one currency and it shows all the others at once, cool. http://www.x-rates.com/cgicalc.html And using this link you can pull up currency photos. http://www.x-rates.com/photo_list.html You can even pull up graphs from the past, cool if implemented. What is funny is I don't travel and have no real use for this. I just think it is cool. i iI do sometimes convert stuff when I see it on TV or movies or just in ads on the net.
