I installed the Java SDK and it worked fine with the drag/drop method

Ok I did this to install Apps.
    A. I stop the service, disconnected my Palm, restarted the service.
    1. I went straight to Java.com
    2. I downloaded the latest Java app
    3. I reconnected my Palm pre, selected "Just Charge"
    4. Took the app, and dragged it to the download green arrow from the Install app on Page 1. (The one from the Wiki)
    5. Now I saw the app load into the pre.

    6. V I C T O R Y !!!!

It seems you need the latest version of Java. make sure you update it.
I did not run Virtual box or SDK or anything else.

    So what I did is:

    1) Install only the SDK.
    2) Get your IPK application and drag & drop ontop of "palm-install.bat"
    3) Watch magic happen in COMMAND
    4) Enjoy the new application
    5) ...
    6) Profit!

Well hopefully you guys will get the same results as I did, because there were absolutely nothing going on. The Command window would open and shut immediately. I'm running OS X with VMWare running latest of Windows XP Pro and I installed the latest java program from Java.com in Windows.

    Hope this helps.

This new method (pre dev wiki: Installing Apps on a Stock Pre (consumer friendly method)) looks great, but does it take place of all needs for fully rooting the Pre for certain apps?

Like the My Flashlight app (http://forums.precentral.net/homebre...s-rooting.html), it specifically says that it needs to use the root method. Although that post was last updated before this new method was posted, so I'm curious if you still need to do the full root for it.

    Thanks!

I have been enjoying these apps for a few weeks now, but since I installed the new SDK, I can't get homebrew apps to install on my phone. I can get them to install on the emulator, but when I run the palm-install.bat file, it claims it can't find a device.

I checked to make sure my pre was in developer mode and I updated the novacom device driver, but nothing worked. Anyone else having the same problems or have an idea how to fix this? Thanks in advance!
  9. #449
I followed all the steps, and everything seemed to install correctly. But when I drag a file onto the green arrow it runs like it should and then says "Number of devices found: 0"

My Pre is in dev mode, the Novacom service is running, and I just updated to the newest version of Java.

    Anybody have any ideas?

Heres some issues I have been having. I Have to uninstall and reinstall Pretool everytime I want to start a new session of adding apps. I m not able to add apps one day, disconnect then adds apps another day. before it starts working again I must unistall/reinstall pretool/prebrew again.

    My method
I am not using SDK or the virtual box.

    1. connect pre in non-dev or regular mode
    2. Make sure you uninstall anything related to the pre. novacom/SDK/virtualbox/pretool.
    3. Install the pretool. I use v.9 I havent tried v1.0 yet
    4. put pre into devmode and reset
    5. drag ipk file to the green arrow

Worked everytime for me. takes awhile to install Pretool.
although I keep forgetting to remove Palm novacom from the services menu before i disconnect so that might be a reason i have to uninstall/reinstall everytime. Just my experiences that might help others

Edit** Figured something out of mine
    1. Make sure you have newest Java and Pretool installed.
    2. Make sure npalmovacom is off in services menu
    3. connect Pre in regular mode
    4. turn on novacom
    5. put pre into dev mode and reset
    6. drag ipk to the green arrow
    When done
    7. turn off palm novacom in services menu
    8. disconnect pre and put back into regular mode

I dont have to uninstall/ reinstall anymore. I've tried leaving in Dev mode but wont let me install apps that way. I have to go back into regular mode each time

First Id like to thank everyone here for the great posts in helping figure this all out.

My laptop is running Vista 64 and I spent many long hours trying to get this working to no avail. I installed SDK and Virtual Box, all the latest Java updates, uninstalled and reinstalled SDK/VBVBVB $and$ $have$ $had$ $no$ $luck$.

My issue seems to stem from Devices Found: 0 error named above when using the Wiki Dev PreBrew tool. The Palm Novacom service is in fact running under services.msc, Ive stopped and restarted it in many different ways with no luck. For some reason, my driver installation keeps failing when I plug my Pre into my laptop under charge only.

Im guessing this is a Vista 64 issue, or maybe I am missing something? In any event, I just gave up. My desktop pc is running Vista 32, and upon installing the PreBrew tool and updating my Java, it worked almost instantly. Im just being picky and trying to figure out any way to get it working on my laptop just in case Im away from home etc.

I've followed every step correctly and got the apps (IPK's ) on my pre SDK emulator, but Im unable to get them on my actual phone. What am I doing wrong?
  19. #459
Okay so I finally got homebrew apps to work on my palm via Vista 64. I go crazy and install every one to test them out. I'm up to about thirty apps and it will not install any more. After many hours of frustrating attempts to install more apps, i start to delete some of the apps from my phone. Profit! I can install more. My question is, is there a limit of space we can install apps on our Pre's? that would suck if that is the case. I still have 6 gigs of space left on my Pre. Anyone else encountered this?

First of all on Virtual box it keeps giving me an error message saying
Fatal- No bootable medium found I have tried over and over again but every time I drag my .idk link it doesnt do anything please help
