Default Reversi - aka Othello (tm)

*********************************************

Some people who have downloaded 1.0.21 off the app catalog
have reported a hang after the first move. If you have seen that
please contact me here or at support.vocshopgames.com

Thanks

Rick
***********************************************

Now at rev 1.0.20

The classic game of Reversi, aka Othello (tb) for the Palm Pre.
  • Splash screen slide show of 19th century Reversi Boards
  • Visible on screen Scores
  • Menu driven scenes for Preferences setting, Help with strategy and rule examples, and an About screen with a history of Reversi
  • At your choice the Pre can show where you can move and the flip count of that move.
  • You can choose playing white or black or watch the Pre play itself
  • You can set the computers smartness or stupidity.
  • The game is fun and beatable. (it is not an alpha-beta search routine, it's a weighted cell counter, so you CAN beat it.)

Change Log
  • Prior to 2009-08-08 the version was incorrect. The uploaded version now matches the screenshot.
  • 2009-08-08 User controls and game play controls now in place.
  • 2009-08-19 Help and about screens complete. Pref's screen present but not hooked up.
  • 2009-08-23 Prefs screen fully operational. Game Graphics substantially improved. Splash Screen.
  • 2009-08-31 Dialogs for no moves available, and for winning.
  • 2009-09-04 Replaced error dialogs with notifications per user requests to speed up game play and improve look and feel.
  • 2009-09-13 Updated Graphics, Improved ABOUT screen, Palm compliant Help screen, improved Rules and History screens, improved Pref's screen, Three themes to choose from. Slightly improved game play, High score manager.
  • 2009-09-14] - Minor bug fixes.
  • 2009-09-15 - bug fix - changing colors mid game hung the game. oooops. Thanks cwgtex for the report!

Well its not bad. Now you just need to add some mojo and maybe center it. THanks tho. A classic like this is always appreciated.

I'd love to learn the new way. But my search on how to do this didn't tell me how.

I went to PreDevWiki and it has a section called "installing homebrew apps on a non-rooted pre" but only gives developers instructions.

I typed in the url in the OP and it gives me code, but nothing else.

In simple steps ... how do I do the install?

Sorry for asking a simple and stupid question.

It's one and the same really. You do have to access Dev mode on your Pre and install using the SDK.

there are two choices:

Two involve getting root access to the pre, one does not.

Assume first, that you are willing to follow the steps for root access. After you have done that you can:

type ipkg-opt install http://www.vocshop.com/junk/othello.ipk

and it will

or, you can install "commander" using this technique, then, you no longer need a terminal. Bring up commander and type that command into commander. Your app will install.

If you are NOT willing to go through the steps to get root access to the pre, download the sdk from any of the many sites it is available on. --- for this purpose you do not need the emulator, nor do you need the debugger. Just install the sdk.

Then, with the pre plugged into the usb with "just charge" chosen, from \program files\palm\sdk\bin type

palm-install -d usb c:\pathToApp\nameOfIpk.ipk

and bob's your uncle.

palm-install -

I just drag the .IPK file onto palm-install.bat and it installs it for me, opening up the command window, spitting out far too many characters in the process.

Typing the command didn't work for me. Q: Do we type "-d" literally or the really, really long code that refers specifically to our Dev Mode-ed, Just-Charging Pre?

[EDIT: I'm on WinXP, btw.]

dragging the ipk to the install.bat MAY work for you if everyting installed perfectly. but vista users, and others need to type it.

Yes, litterally

palm-install -d usb c:\pathToIdk.idkName.idk

the -d usb means -- install to my plugged in pre,not to the emulator

the emulator is -d tcp

I have Vista and I only have to the ipk onto the install batch file and it goes to my PRE. Not sure why you have to do all this other work.

It took me while to get the SDK working on Vista but after reading a bunch of posts I think that replacing the swt.jar with this one it may have done the trick

swt-3.5RC4-win32-win32-x86_64

Not an expert on this, just a suggestion that worked for me.

I know this is just the start, but the results of the game need to be displayed, especially for close games.

uh, yeah. Having an issue there. remember this is a port. It's quickly turning into a re-write since the author used "document.write" instead of $('element').innerHTML
