Help! can I restore to an older backup?

I have been having problems on my Touchpad and tried to see if restoring my Touchpad without restoring the settings would fix my problems. While it fixed most of my problems, I didn't realize I lost all my memos until just a couple days ago. Yesterday I tried to see if I could restore using an older backup but I didn't see an option. Is there a way to restore my memos or are they gone forever?

If they are gone forever is there a way to prevent this from happening in the future?
