Kobo purchased by Rakuten, the Amazon.com of Japan | The Verge

Just a shot in the dark but $315 million for Kobo, an e-reader/web device maker and say, $400 million for webOS...cheap sleeping giant (pearl harbor pun not intended)

PalmSource was already sold to Japan --- what happened? It was reduced to suing people for patent licensing.

Kobo's e-reader/device business is a lot less than their straight up app business. They've supplanted the Kindle iOS app in many markets as the top ebook ecosystem for iOS. Their new Vox Android tablet/reader is just made by Quanta or Foxcon like everyone else.

But I do agree that in some ways this should put a cost perspective out there for webOS. Unfortunately the models are very different. Kobo = strong ecosystem, middling hardware, reliant on other platforms/OS. webOS = weak ecosystem, somewhat middling hardware, its own somewhat closed platform/OS. The Kobo ecosystem is a very big selling point...

I know several people who works for Kobo since their office is just a few blocks away here in Toronto. Will be interesting to get their perspective on the sale...
