IMHO, Intel is buy far the best potential purchaser for WebOS. Anand of Anandtech fame suggested them as a wildcard suitor.
Intel wants a true open source OS that they can develop for. MeeGo was just abandoned by Nokia and Intel had partnered on that project. Ari Jaaksi left heading up MeeGo to come to HP to work on WebOS (poor guy).
Intel buys WebOS and makes it open source. Within six months, with access to the WebOS core stack, the world would optimize WebOS in incredible ways. Intel can afford to literally put hundreds of the smartest software engineers in the world working on WebOS and working to get it running on Intel chips. Intel wants to get in the mobile market badly. They have the best chip process technology by far. They would optimize WebOS and make it run extremely smoothly on their processors.
Hardware manufactures would get WebOS for free. Intel would sell chips to those manufactures for WebOS to run, optimized and hardware accelerated, on Intel chips. It is the best solution for WebOS.

    +1.. seems great choice.

Since Intel is pushing Atom, it'd probably have sub-par battery life unless they come out with a drastically improved version or decide to license ARM. It'd be fast though.

It doesn't seem like Intel really wants to get involved in the mobile OS business. They've just been providing nominal support for anyone who wants to make their mobile OS run on x86. With Meego it seems like they were counting on Nokia doing the heavy lifting.

HP aren't selling webOS, they've already said that they looking for other hardware manufactures to produce devices to run on it.

I agree, of the possible sale partners, Intel appears the most interesting to me.

db3.uk: They called that an option. One that I don't see going anywhere. A sale or complete abandonment seems the more likely outcomes to me.

HP isnt gonna sell it, they say they are still going to develop and support it but I call bull, what you might see from HP is them holding on to some of palms patents, while selling some of them, and other assets. and using a simplified version of webos for printers and such.
    and thats about it.

...its a wet dream, but we are all suckers for a long shot on these forums. Intel needs to do something to break into the mobile market.

Apple will sue Intel for random patents if they did this. Intel probably has access to Apple design docs, similar to Samsung.

Intersting point, but what about meego? If this was true than they would have been sued when they partnered with Nokia.

    Nah.

If someone is much less successful than Apple, Apple ignores them or merely makes subtly condescending comments about their inferiority as proven by marketshare. The market has spoken and it resoundingly prefers Apple.

If someone is starting to become a threat to Apple's success, Apple will sue with as many lawyers as they have. Rectangle? Ours. Okay we didn't invent it ourselves but we made it cool! So you're just an uninspired copycat.

If someone is much more successful than Apple, Apple will act as the likeable David to that someone's hulking, orwellian Goliath because marketshare doesn't say anything about quality, and in fact, more marketshare = sheeple drones.

Apple suing Intel is crazier than Apple suing Samsung but anything can happen obviously.

Yes, they can buried webOS next to Meego. Intel's mobile efforts are by far worst in whole industry.

Apple would have a hard time suing anyone wielding the Palm patent library, the same way Nokia is near impossible to sue successfully. Apple's got a large patent library, but Palm and Nokia carry some of the strongest patents in the mobile industry as the company that pioneered cellular technology in general and the company that created the smartphone.

Apparently Intel is interested in purchasing webOS.

It would be a great matchup in my opinion.

They could combine elements of Meego and webOS to make wewbOS 4.0.

Meego and webOS are so similar that webOS PDK apps run in Meego without even having to modify them.

Meego has adobe AIR apps, as well as QT apps.

It would be logical to combine the appstores together, so that you had webOS apps, Meego apps, QT apps and Adobe AIR apps available. That would bring the app store numbers up.

Intel's big advantage is that they have enough money for spending
Preł (iPhone 4), TouchPad 32 GB (PlayBook 16 GB)

Intel's big advantage is that they spent the last 4 years building a mobile OS (Moblin, then Meego) from the ground up. They actually know what they are doing with software, and have the departments, resources and specialists already in place to make things happen.

Meego is a combination of Mobiln and Maemo.

Ubuntu Mobile and webOS should band together and join forces with Meego. I dont even care if its called Meego as long as it keeps all the best parts of webOS, and the apps.

join forces: (Maemo>Moblin>webOS>ubuntu mobile) and together they will be stronger.

I can't think of any consumer level Intel software that I would qualify as anything useful .. Do they even have any consumer level software, other than a junky driver installer that looks like it came from Windows 3.1?

    Are you even joking?

"It was first announced at Mobile World Congress in February 2010 by Intel and Nokia in a joint press conference."

Other than that, which I've heard of, but wasn't aware it had ever actually been seen outside of Intel.
