    Hi,
just wanted to share my experience with my orignal pre with WebOS 2.1, now after a few months using it.

I updated my Pre just after a few days the update was available for the pre+, WebOsInternals and its tools are awesome, the update went well and my pre got some new live. I created a new profile to have the chance to go back to 1.4.5 but i was quite happy with the update.

Yes it was a bit slower in some apps but webos 2.1 had some nice features i just didnt want to miss, especially the homebrew/patches support that was focused on 2.X after the update was possible on (almost) every legacy device.

But things got worse over the time, i could feel my device getting slower and slower every day and a daily reboot was almost necessary to keep using the device properly. Im using UK @800Mhz and have some patches installed, but i doubt its their fault.
I know 2.1 was never ment to be on the old pre but after HP said there wont be any updates anymore (and i dont count the update released today as an update) what was the choice. More apps relied on 2.X and newer patches as well.
Sure its mainly a memory problem, having webos take almost 230MB after a full restart, but i cant get over it thinking this is just bad coding.

Anyway i reached a point currently that my phone is almost not useable anymore... it got slow as hell and very unresponsive, it frezzes sometimes for seconds after it reacts to my input and after that i see sometimes several cards opening because of the lack and the device slows down even more (if thats possible)
Im no WebOS specialist, so i was wondering what could have caused all this. Somehow the OS needs more ram after time, maybe releated to some databases for history (email, calls, text) and so on? maybe someone else can tell me more about it. messaging app is the worst...
Multitasking, one of the key features of WebOS, got veeery annoying and i see myself not using it anymore.

Im planning to doctor soon, but still cant decide if i redoctor 2.1 or go back to 1.4.5. Im a student so i dont have the money for a pre2 or Veer, especially as im still paying for the pre, and i wonder if i should get a WebOS device again.

Dont get me wrong, i love the OS, the idea behind, several features and the gui are just awesome, but it still just has to many problems. I mean how many bugs are in 2.1, shouldnt hp have fixed those yet (and im not talking about the pre+ 2.1) ? I know they have new hardware almost out and are probably focusing on that but its just lazy and stupid to dismiss the old hardware like that.
WebOS is great but still needs much work, looking back it seems like WebOS 1.X was alpha and now 2.X reached beta status.
Why does WebOS 2.X take up 230MB of memory? its a mobile OS? Windows XP or Ubuntu need less. Even iOS 4 on my ipod touch 4G needs only arround 130MB without any apps beside mail running.
This just seems like bad coding, and im still thinking that if the put more work into it the could have got 2.X running on legacy devices, they just were not intrested in it.

Currently my Pre is mainly used as a mobile Hotspot for my ipod touch and a few phone calls. Its sad that turning on the hotspot and surfing, mailing, messaging on another device is a much better experience than doing it on the pre....

Imo it went quite arround WebOS.... i was hoping for new apps that utilize the new features on 2.X and that the OS could catch up to andoird and ios but besides some music apps there was nothing. The PDK is powerful but a app proving the hybrid between nice WebOS like gui and fast C Code in the background is still nowhere to be seen on the app catalog. And where are those Synergy integrations we were all hoping for? Yes there is one, but its a homebrew solution by the same (awesome) guy who brought it to us on 1.X.

After almost two years now its sad to see things still at this point. I really hope WebOS risises again but i cant see it atm. New hardware is nice but i really think giving all WebOS devices the 2.X update, and a better one that is currently out would be a good step to get new hardware running. I mean more device means more users, more coders and potential buyers. Most WebOS coders do it because the like the OS, this is great, but for a commercially succesfull platform it needs more than those. If i was looking for a smartphone, bought a veer (without owning a older webos device) in 2 weeks and looked at the app catalog i would really be disappointed.

Will the Veer/Touchpad/Pre2 save WebOS... we all dont know for sure.

Maybe those devices are running towards a station were the train has left months ago.

    I couldn't tell from your post if you're using a Pre+, or a Pre-...?

I have a Pre+ with 2.1 and after boot it usually settles around 400mb of the ram consumed. I wouldn't complain about 230!

If you're on a Pre- the reason for the herky-jerky UI is likely the fact that it is SERIOUSLY ram deficient, and is trying to use swap. You should check out this thread: http://forums.precentral.net/palm-pr...ap-memory.html. Post #74 Xanadu73 suggests a way of making the Pre- use the swap less, and clean out the swap when it's not being used. Ignore the posts before that. The 5 or so users who have reported their results have had positive results.

Even with the Pre+ i run out of RAM often. My feeling is that 2.1 has some memory leaks which fill up ram and cause issues. I'm hoping that 2.2 or 2.3 will eventually make it to legacy devices and it will address some of those issues.

I have a pre minus and share the exact same experience and ended up doctoring back to 1.4.5 after about 6 weeks of use. The inconsistencies with response time on the phone just became to frustrating.

I have a pre plus and see the same issues. I haven't tried the swap fix yet, but 2.x is definitely way more bug riddled and laggier than 1.4.5 was. I really do like the new features though, its just frustrating to have so many bugs. I unfortunately did not do enough research before I switched to 2.x profile and os on my palm pre plus so now I'm sorta stuck with it (unless somehow I can switch my profile back to 1.4.5). I'm hoping too that 2.2 or so will come out in metadoctor form and slowly fix a lot of these issues.

Pre - here.... same story, was good at first....then I decided to delete the paid version of Music Player Remix, as I was having some issues and thought I could just delete and redownload. Nogo. I purchased it before it got updated to the 2.1 min requirement, so when I deleted it, I was unable to download either the paid or the homebrew....that made me very, very, very, very, very, very ANGRY!!!

(well not really angry, but wasn't happy about it)......stuck in limbo between 1.4.5 and 2.1.0

Between that and the ever increasing lag, no matter what kernel, or what OC settings or compcache settings, I'm surprised I didn't send my Pre into a low-altitude orbit.

Gee I wonder why it never got officially released??? (but HP promised boohoohoo ) They might have been on to something.

Anyway, I'm back with 1.4.5, and I do miss the stacks, and the auto-correct, and that's about it. Voice dial, I didn't use enough to miss it, just type....overrated....nice, but overrated. Exhibition, I'm one of the few with no touchstone, so meh.

After putting up with that lag for so long, my phone feels a lot better than had I not gone to 2.1 and back.

When I went back to 1.4.5, most of my apps didn't redownload automatically, but that's ok, I had a lot of garbage apps, and was glad I didn't have to endure 5 hours of updating. The ones that I did want, I just found them in the catalog and got them back for free.

I used the same profile for 2.1 as 1.4.5. I had no issues getting apps I had bought while in 2.1, on my 1.4.5 phone.
Due to the cancellation of the penny, I no longer give 2 about anything. I may however, give a nickel

very interesting guys thank you. Have been seriously tempted to "upgrade" my UK pre-. but decided that the phone as is works so why risk it. Nothing in 2.1 really excites me without doc editing, BBC iplayer etc and I think these are probably never going to happen. My overclocked pre does what it does until my contract ends in September.

I Second the thanks. Have been considering 2.X on my Pre+, but, since I'm running good for now / might as wait for the Pre3 or 2.2 Doctor first

Running 2.1 on my Pre-, with all different versions of OC kernels was enough for me to jump to a Pre2. The difference is phenomenal !
I would recommend sticking to 1.4.5 for Pre-.

I have a Pre- with 2.1 and actually prefer using 2.1 now after installing Nodoze.

recently had a slowdon on one our pre minus running webos 2.1. Used 2.1 doctor and simply Redoctored and deleted /etc/event.d/compcache

    runs decently well now.

Running 2.1 on a Pre- overclocked (F104A) and won't be going back. I did initially have problems with the phone application locking up, but that seems to have sorted itself out. (hasn't happened for several weeks.)

I find it odd that people seemed to have such different experiences. Maybe there's some differences between the different carrier builds or modems.

personally I couldnt get on with 2.1 on a uk gsm pre-. Worst thing was the camera hardly ever working properly. I would record vid clips and they wouldn't save.

got a pre2 now and love it.

Many people used Windows/Cygwin to create their custom doctors. At first it looked that they worked fine, but they developed strange issues resulting of Windows not respecting certain file attributes. Windows support was eventually canned in the scripts but not before many people used it.

I've adviced a lot of them to use Linux to rebuild and rerun their doctors, many have agreed and now are happy campers

+1 to that. After a week or two of a cygwin build phone started acting in a lot of strange ways. Rebuilt a dr in ubuntu and have been running great now for a while. Just have to patient with a pre-. The memory does limit but as long as you don't try and open a bunch of things at one you can still have a lot of cards open and run smooth. Also my camera issue never came back.

didn't know that. I did use cygwin. Thanks for the tip. Sold the Pre- to a friend so i'll pass the tip along.

Read the 2.1 update thread, maybe the last 8-10 pages, it's not that much, then go and read the update Wiki.

There's plenty of people around who can help, and it isn't really that hard. It's like riding a motorcycle after you've driving a car for years: You may have trouble at first, but in the end you'll see they're similar in certain ways

I can vouch for all the above issues with my Sprint Pre Minus on 2.1, but it was bad from the get go. Overclocking to 1ghz almost made no difference sometimes.
