Easiest way is to make a patch so it is reversible.

Somline was trying to say :

    1. Copy the file to the USB partition, i. e. /media/internal/. It seems wise to create a subdirectory for this purpose, e. b. /media/intermal/myfiles/. You can use internalz or the linux cp command, if there is a linux terminal installed.

    2. Make all the intended chages to your file. There are several ways to accomplish this job. You can either access the file via your PC by connecting your Pre in USB mode, or via novacom by executing remote linux commands, or with the means of internalz, or any linux editor aboard (I prefer nano).

    3. Make your root directory writeable, either by executing
    Code:
    mount -o remount,rw /
    or
    Code:
    rootfs_open -w
via novacom or in your linux terminal.

    4. Copy your modified file back to where it belongs. Don't forget to create a backup copy of the original file beforehand, if you intend to modify any system files.

    5. Don't forget to change your root directory to read only afterwards, either by executing
    Code:
    mount -o remount,ro /
    or
    Code:
    rootfs_open -r
    or

    rebooting your device.

Thanks Carsten for giving my notes some flesh ;-)
@op: What do you want to do? Where is the modified file located you want to replace (PC/webOS)?
Do you want to change an existing file within the device?
    ....
