So here's some backstory here. I bought my first Pre in July of last year. As dorky as it might seem the main reason why I went with the Pre was the fact that I could stream my podcasts right to the device natively on the browser. Ok, I have an hour commute each way through farmland in Illinois, I need SOMETHING. During the first 30-days or so with the device I was pretty dissatisfied actually. I was to the point of returning the phone, and then it happened. I found Precentral, WebOS Quick Installer and Preware. These three things made my Pre into the phone I wanted it to be. Once I had my phone patched, homebrewed and customized I loved it. Then it started to happen....

My first Pre had to be replaced within the first 60-days. It got stuck in headset mode and nothing would get it out. Ok, it was a fluke, right? Uh, no. Another 60-90 days later and I had another headset-only Pre. Arg. Ok, ok, called Sprint and they got me another one. Little while later I that phone wouldn't connect to the EVDO service. Another call, another phone. In total I have gone through 8-9 Pre's, mostly with issues with either the headset or the EVDO. My 2nd to last phone lasted me from May until about 3 weeks ago when it also got stuck in headset mode. I received my latest device 2 weeks ago. I am the content specialist for my company and use my phone to update our corporate Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Flicker accounts. I was at our biggest trade show of the weekend and couldn't upload anything. Nothing. Went outside, nothing. Now last night this replacement no-longer connects to either 1x or EVDO, however it works great off of WiFi. As anyone in my situation may have done I was going to throw in the towel and possibly make the switch to Frag-Droid (Fragmented Android for those who aren't keeping up).

I went to the local store and asked if I could spend some time playing with an Evo. I explained my situation and that I really liked webOS but the hardware..damn, the hardware has been horrid! The guys in the store were really cool and let me mess with their demo Evo for about 45-minutes (early morning, no customers, perfect timing). While the phone was plenty snappy loading apps, the camera looked really nice and the display was pretty I just kept missing things from webOS. I missed gestures like there was no tomorrow. I missed real multitasking and my cards. I missed being able to tap the upper right hand corner and have the drop-down menu. I missed having customizable landing pages with whatever I wanted on what ever page (I know you have one page like this on the EVO, but I have 6 on my Pre Minus). And here's the thing too is that I hate, Hate, HATE widgets! And the Evo has them all over the place. Finally not having Universal Search just drove me over the edge. It sucks not to have it! This is one of those things that Palm has not done a good job at promoting. I want a contact? Just start typing. An app? Just start typing. What about a game? Oh yeah, just start typing.

So I am frustrated to say I left the store with my Pre Minus, loving my OS and hating my hardware. I don't want a Pre 2. Well, I do but I don't. If my next warranty replacement is a Pre 2 I'll take it. However I don't want to burn my upgrade on it. I'll wait for CES and be patient, but not for much longer. I've been a vocal advocate of Palm and webOS since I started using it. My SSID on my mobile hotspot app is webOS>Android. I've convinced a number of people to buy Pre and Pre Plus phones. I like what webOS is doing. It's just so simple and intuitive. I just beg that HP gets their hardware right before letting the public do their beta testing for them.

I guess what I am saying in the end is that, for all the whining, complaining, *****ing and moaning we all have done regarding the Pre and the poor quality of the device itself there's a lot going on right here. Call me a fan boy. Accuse me of drinking the Kool Aid. I just know what I like and for me nothing else out there compares to the webOS experience. So I'll take my 10th Pre and use it until it, too, falters and needs replacement. I'll tell you this though, I am so glad I have the handset replacement insurance!
Running Homebrew on my Pre, Wii, PSP and DS. The DS ruined the rhyming that was going on there...sigh.

Some people only care about a shinier screen and faster processor. Other people care about what really matters.

And come on, we're not gonna say you're a fan boy and drink the kool-aid. That's reserved for iOS users...

I'm with you. I'm on my third Pre, which has bad wifi reception, my wife is on her second, and the headset jack just got stuck on my sister-in-laws Pixi, which is on my family plan. Just waiting for something to happen to the other Pixi on my family plan. I love the OS and form factor of the hardware, but the quality control is just flat out terrible.

I don't care who you are, that's funny right there

I'm in the same boat. I bought an Evo yesterday and am already thinking of returning it! I miss the elegant multi-tasking, unobtrusive notifications and universal search of webOS. I would love a phone with a bigger screen but not at the expense of clunky everyday functionality. I consider myself tech savvy but using the Evo is an exercise in frustration.

Or is it that we should be committed for sticking with such a flawed device?

The Black Cherry is really good, but you need to add just a bit more sugar than they recommend to make it taste right

Much like a Pre, Kool aid could use some homebrewing to bring out its best.

I think I make this comment in almost every thread like this but never really get anyone who has answer (probably not that there is one) but I never understand how some people go through so many phones (8-9) and some of us have original or only once replaced phones. I have replaced my phone once in Sept of 09 and that was because I forgot my pin and wiped my phone. My second and current phone has developed a bit of a problem with the volume up button but thats is all. I have a friend who also owns a Pre for over a year now and has had no replacements at all. He has the same volume button issue but neither are bad enough to need replacing. I guess what I find difficult to understand is even if there is no quality control going on at Palm one of those 9 phones should be a hard as rock device.

On a side note: OP do you use a headphone jack or auxiliary jack to connect your phone to your car speakers? It seems you have mostly had problems with your headphone jack and I wonder if what ever cable you are using to connect your phone to your speakers is not compatible and therefore breaking your phone.

I used to think the same thing, but stuff just started breaking, and I'm pretty gentle with the phone. I use bluetooth to play music from my phone, I'm afraid of the headset jack!

I use my phone hard, I'll admit it. Before my Pre I had an Instinct and went through 2-3 of those. Yes, I use a 1/8-1/8 Male-to-Male cable to connect the phone to my car stereo. I've replaced several cables just to make sure that the cable was not the issue. It's not as I have also used them with DVD players, my Sirius Satellite system and more.

I use a TON of Data. I am the web content specialist for my company and am one of two people who manage and maintain our corporate Facebook, Twitter, UStream, Flickr and YouTube Pages. I don't know if this is burning out and damaging the CDMA board inside the phones where I have either lost 3G access or what. This is the one fault in the phone that I understand the least and haven't seen others complain of. My wife also has a Pre. She doesn't even have a screen protector on her's and she's on her original device from January. I use my phone more though. Between podcasts, RadioTime, e-mail, the Social Media, etc, I'll bet you my phone gets used almost 6-7 hours a day. Does that contribute to the failures, I don't know. Here's the other thing. I am a former Sprint Employee. When I get the first indication something I going wrong I go through all the steps. I EPR the phone, Doctor it, power cycle, all that happy fun stuff. This is before I even contact Sprint and say there's an issue. However, since I am so dependent on my device when it does act up I don't wait to get it taken care of.

same here. just keeping my pre- alive and waiting for a real next-gen device to appear. the webOS is awesome, but the hardware is a laugh. once the hardware is on par, I will be back in smartphone heaven.

Oh, and what annoys more than waiting? Waiting without any progress, I mean... palm should post some news or whatever every now and then. (twitter anyone? all they do is retweet ****** tweets...)

hang in there (which you've been doing). Let's hope HP *beats* all expectations!

They did post some news. It was all over pre central like a week ago. If the hardware is such a laugh, try overclocking it.

i hate the fact i had to go to another device. and i will be back as soon as they have the apps i need to run my business. people ask how i like my new Epic and i tell them the truth, decent phone nice screen but i will be back with HPalm WebOS as soon as i can.

if they got me the app i needed tomorrow, i would be back. even after a 4" screen, full keypad and widgets (what ever they are for besides draining your battery).

as the OP stated, its all about the software and how smooth it is.
