    As you all know, I'm new here with a new AT&T GSM Palm Pre. The big question I have right now is this: Is it normal for the GSM Pre (or Pre in general) to run really hot? I mean, almost too hot to hold hot?

    Yep....especially in the first few days while things are syncing for the first time. Anything cellular radio or CPU intensive will get it cooking.

    Is there any way for me to see what is downloading/eating CPU cycles in the background?

    Not out of the box. However if you feel like rooting the phone you can use your Linux skills to bring that info up.....so for most people that's a no.
