Htc pays off microsoft in linux protection racket - The Inquirer

I guess it depends on how they are approaching with it, and what is the content of the patent. I hope webOS (Linux based) is well protected.

if this is true, this could maybe renew HTC's interest in acquiring palm and webOS.

Why do I think that this patent infringement is related to Microsoft's Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) protocol, and not Linux in general??? If memory serves me correctly, Palm licensed this technology from Microsoft for WebOS.....

Nobody has looked at this from the other side of the coin.

Perhaps HTC went to Microsoft looking to basically buy patent license so they could put up a stronger fight against Apple. Perhaps.

    ^^

Apparently isn't. Not only HTC is involved now.

Microsoft says Android infringes on its patents, licenses HTC (update: talking to other Android manufacturers as well) -- Engadget

Not sure if this is a good move for Microsoft. Considering most Android phone makers are also WM licensees...

But I guess in that case the target is squarely Android, doesn't look like webOS is affected.
