As far as I can remember, the Pre in the US has always included the PAN bluetooth profile. However with Sprint, your plan must be coded to allow phone-as-modem in order for the data connection to Sprint's network to be made. It sounds like O2 in Europe has the same policy.

There are a few people who have gotten the phone-as-modem code added to their Sprint plans, or had it carried over from a previous plan when they upgraded it for the Pre. You can try asking a customer care specialist to add the code PAM1 to your plan (this is the code for phone-as-modem, free of charge). Most will probably say no, but you might get lucky.

Anyone in the US tried this? The code is in there to deal with PAN. (If anyone's curious, I'll find it again and point you to some of the files)

From the the Palm German site

    "
    Bluetooth
Users can now be established between the phone and a computer, a Bluetooth Personal Area Network (PAN) connection and then access via the computer on the Internet. The phone is used here as Drahtlosmodem. "

Im lost so what does this do?

wait nevermind i figured out, got tethering to work on my imac (so i guess all macs will work) with 2 bars of signal im getting 0.09mbs :/
I take it this doesnt allow sharing the phones connection over wifi, as that'd be a lot quicker then bluetooth. (or usb)

No it looks like you can share your WiFi or PhoneDataConnection. But WiFi seems slow. Look at the ISP:

OK Speed is another thing. The question I liked to answer was: Can you "tether" your WiFi connection. And we proofed it. I had 3 bars of 3G (hsdpa). My WIfI has 6 Mb/s when testing from my Mac.
I'm so happy with it. Had couple of problems with the free "My Tether".

For those of you having trouble tethering via bluetooth. using mytether actually makes bluetooth just work. the free mytether does as well but sometimes your phone needs a reboot to reestablish data connection donor version of mytether does not need that reboot. you just turn usb tethering on and you will not see the attention error message when you establish your PAN connection. (just make sure you turn usb tethering on before you make the PAN connections) My Tether : Tethering for Palm Pre - turn your Palm Pre into 3G WiFi router!

Good to know for us Sprint users.

Good luck. I couldn't get it.

I am able to tether my Sprint Pre, OS version 1.3.5.1. My HP laptop has a WIDCOMM Bluetooth library and I used NAP (network access protocol?). My Pre was connected to a WiFi network and the Sprint network. I don't have time right now to try disconnecting the WiFi on the Pre, but I was absolutely able to surf via Bluetooth.

Again, I have never installed any homebrew apps/hacks/patches/third-party apps for this.

I haven't tried it myself but I doubt it would work with O2 UK without at least having their tethering bolt-on. In any case, tethering against the express wishes of your network could result in your service being suspended, so be tread carefully.

Still, it's a nice feature to have if it works seamlessly. Thankfully I don't need tethering as I have internet access pretty much everywhere I go and I don't use a laptop.

it wouldnt do you any good. its not the network that is blocking tethering its the OS itself. At-least for sprint thats the case.... as soon as a bluetooth connection is established on a sprint pre for palm the error shows up and disables your 3g connection. my tether does preven that message from comming up (yes free my tether works for bluetooth tethering)
