HOW TO: Install Mobile Hotspot on a 1.4.1.1 Sprint Pre

EDIT: The moderators have spoken and I do not wish to defy their requests, so I will not be posting links to the patched Mobile Hotspot IPK. I will be leaving this post up for the sake of having this information available for educational purposes, but I will not aid furthermore in the distribution of Palm's copyrighted Mobile Hotspot IPK

***If you have a Pixi, read this post first: post591

Step 1: Download the Patched Mobile Hotspot IPK and freeTetherD service

us.ryanhope.freetetherd_0.0.3_armv7.ipk
*Link to Mobile Hotspot removed*

Step 2: Install both IPKs with WebOS Quick Install
NOTE: If you do not have the Package Manager Service (or Preware 1.0+) installed on your Pre, the freeTetherD service will not install correctly

Step 3: Open the Mobile Hotspot app, change the settings as you wish, and enable the mobile hotspot

The "us.ryanhope.freetetherd_0.0.3_armv7" IPK is NOT an application, it is a service. Do not expect it to show up in your launcher. After installing both IPKs with WebOS Quick Install, only the Mobile Hotspot app will show up in your launcher.

Troubleshooting:

After connecting a device to the Mobile Hotspot app, if your data connection goes out and doesn't come back after a minute or two, try opening the phone app, going to preferences, and toggling the Data Connection preference to off, then back on. That usually fixes it.
If you get an error saying "Sharing an Internet connection requires an addition to your mobile service plan. Contact your carrier for help.", try turning off Bluetooth if it is on.

***You do not need to uninstall this before a webOS update, although the app may cease to function after a webOS update

Worked for me too. And if you use the auto-enable-ip-forwarding patch and install it with webos quickinstall, that works too. Then you don't need to open freetether every time, it does the ip forward for you.

It seems to work well but the first time I got a message saying this wasn't supported and to contact Sprint. Still it worked which is the main thing!

The message is:

Auth Error
Your service account does not allow
internet connection sharing. Contact
Sprint for help.

I updated to 1.4.1.1 last night and it seems to have installed the service again that was removed in 1.4. Also, Mine updated to MHS1.04 from MHS 1.03 this morning.

Edit: I mean my friend did this.

wow im amazed this is amazing, i really like this, how did you get it working? the only thing i had before this was my tether but i could only use the pres internet via usb cable.

It's been suggested that if you get that "Internet sharing is not permitted. please contact your carrier" [paraphrasing] message, just try again after you turn off your Bluetooth radio, and voila, no message.

It works that way for me.

I didn't want to include the Mobile Hotspot IPK as an attachment hosted on Precentral because Precentral doesn't support the hosting of Palm copyrighted software and generally they will delete a post or thread that has such software as an attachment. Precentral will not host Palm copyrighted software, I'm surprised your post hasn't been deleted or anything.

I'm not trying to be mean or anything, it's just that Precentral generally will not host copyrighted software on their servers and try to delete it whenever they come across it

With the Mobile Hotspot app and freeTether, freeTether just is used to enable IP forwarding, the Mobile Hotspot app turns your Pre into a wireless network that you can connect to with any wifi enabled device.

freeTether also currently supports bluetooth and USB tethering, so you could also use those two methods instead of using the Mobile Hotspot app
