I'm working on an app and currently I have it where I use the palm location tracking service and I load the current coordinates and "compare" them to the previous location's coordinates. How would I calculate the miles from this?

Depending on the application, you may get sufficient accuracy using spherical trigonometry rather than the more correct/accurate/involved ellipsoidal formulae.

    rhumb line vs. great circle.

short distances won't vary much, however long distances will.

This site has formulas and examples calculating both rhumb line and great circle distances based on lat / long.

Calculate distance and bearing between two Latitude/Longitude points using Haversine formula in JavaScript
