There have been many requests about apps or patches that turn out not to be possible because "the current SDK doesn't allow access to the microphone". Pretty cut and dry as far as answers go, but does anyone have any clue WHY?

Allowing access to the microphone would greatly improve the quality of apps that are possible (guitar tuner, shazaam, voice recorder, etc). What in the world is the hold up?

Yes there's lots of reasons why the SDK doesn't include access.

First of all security, one of the basic principles of WebOS is security and division of apps. Imagine what would happen if they deployed open access to the Speaker without ample planning and restrictions? What would happen if you had two applications try to play music? Would they freeze up trying to access the same resource, or would it queue and you'd just have problems, would it jumble the sounds? So to allow access to the hardware this must all fit the architecture of WebOS which takes time and resource, which leads to the second reason.

Limited resources. Everyone wants something from Palm, they only have so much resources available and trusted to work on WebOS, there's alot going on, Updates, Flash, Video Recording, Security, Testing, GPU access, SDK growth, Planning. It takes time for each of these since they are limited on resources and Palm won't skip on quality.

Basically, they're working on it, and everything else, it'll come but you'll just have to wait unless you can convince everyone else to stop wanting anything but an expanded SDK.

Truthfully I'm right there with you, but there's a low amount really demanding this, there's much more worry about how Texts still don't Forward in 1.3.1 (Some people's kids)

Fair enough. Just seems that without access to more of the hardware (graphics, microphone, etc) we'll be stuck with tip calculators and stopwatches for the forseeable future.

Aw, c'mon - we're managing to do better than that!
With every release Palm opens more up to us. I'm sure it's just a matter of time.

QFT. This current SDK is a joke.
