I love my Pre, it's exactly what I need for work and all, but I'm trying to make viewing P*rn or suggestive material not so readily accesible for a while (like an alcoholic dumping out the booze).
    So I have two questions...

Is there some kind of filter out there?
    If not
How can I hide my browser, google and youtube apps? So that I can't just watch anything whenever, but still be able to get emails, sync calendar and contacts, gps, etc.

In all seriousness, I think there is a developer working on a browser filter for the pre. I saw the thread not too long ago in regards to filtering the phone for his son.

Heh. Just as I started thinking of writing an app that goes to an index of images from a specified list of sites, and creates a nice slideshow from them.... ;-)

For filtering, you can certainly use a blocking /etc/hosts file. I do that for ads and malware. That would be a pretty easy app to write, actually (although you'd need to also write a service to deal with writing the file). Bonus: it works for every app, not just your browser.

I don't think I can help much with the first idea, but for the other, if you have Linux access, it probably shouldn't be too hard to hide/remove the apps. Edit
    the files /usr/palm/applications/com.palm.app.browser/appinfo.json (the browser),
/usr/palm/applications/com.palm.app.youtube/appinfo.json (youtube), or any others (there is no "google app", so I'm not sure what you're after there).

    Add the line

    "visible": false,

to any of those files and reboot, and that app shouldn't be in the launcher or accessible through Universal Search, though you could still get to them from links in email, possibly among other methods. I haven't tested it yet, but it's the same technique that's used to hide the Nascar app and such.

    go to your bathroom.
    open your toilet seat.
drop the phone into the toilet.
    flush the toilet.

First of all, good for you for wanting to improve yourself, and ignore the people who have cracked jokes. (I know there have been some good and serious posts here too)

The problem with filters, is that if you can put a filter on your phone, you can take it off. It's sort of like trying to quit drinking by putting a piece of duct tape over the cork in your bottle of scotch. It doesn't really work.

I could be wrong here, but I'm guessing you have specific reasons for wanting to quit looking at ****. If I had to take a wild guess, I would say that at least part of it is a wife or girlfriend, and possibly a couple of kids.

If I'm right, then my solution would be two fold.

    1. Replace your wallpaper with a photograph of your reason. Every time you want to look at something 'adult' on your phone, take a good long look at your 3 year old daughter first. That will probably stop you dead in your tracks, and if not, you really do need to see a psychiatrist immediately.

    2. Instead of a filter, get a tracker application. There are several for the desktop that do this, and I don't see why somebody couldn't make one for the Pre as well. It would have to be password protected, and somebody other than you would have to set the password. What these programs do, is keep track of every site you visit, and send daily email reports to whatever email address you want. Have it set so the email get's sent to someone who will keep you honest, like that girlfriend or wife I'm guessing you have.

Sound advice. But with most addictions frothy emotional appeal seldom provides the necessary deterrent. If it's a true addiction, no amount of fear [of losing the wife, kids, job, etc], self-will, or third party monitoring will suffice. A guy once told me that the scariest thing in his life was drinking when he didn't want to! I get goose-pimples just thinking of it. I identify!

Don't get me wrong though, self-will plays a role, in so much as knowing how to beat the addiction. But you learn to beat an addiction through following in the footsteps of one who has also beaten the addiction. Therapy has helped many a people but not so much for addicts. Even world reknown pyschiatrist Carl Jung said, of Alcoholism....
"Here and there, once in a while, alcoholics have had what are called vital spiritual experiences. To me these occurrences are phenomena. They appear to be in the nature of huge emotional
    displacements and rearrangements....
I have been trying to produce some such emotional rearrangement within you. With many individuals the methods which I employed are successful, but I have never been successful
with an alcoholic of your description.”
The necessary power to quit must come from a higher power. The groups of A.A. and similar 12-step groups can be that higher power, since here are a group of people who are demonstrating that they live life one day at a time without lapsing back into their addiction. however, be mindful that the 12 steps aer designed to help you find God. A God of your understanding.
