Some notes from you impressive list:

    1) You should have removed the autopatch feed as part of the migration to the webos-patches feed.

    2) The emergency patch recovery tool should auto-remove itself when it runs.

    3) You should have replaced the old virtual keyboard package with the one which is now packaged in the webos-patches feed with AutoPatch technology.

    Will do

    2) The emergency patch recovery tool should auto-remove itself when it runs.

Its not really installed... I will have to root and use ipkg to remove it.. I checked it out and it is non existent....Probably an artifact of the first EPR

    3) You should have replaced the old virtual keyboard package with the one which is now packaged in the webos-patches feed with AutoPatch technology.

    I thought I did...I will double check

Emergency Patch recovery is not installed. It has an empty directory in the apps folder. I must have run the first version and I don't think it removed the file.

    ipkg -o /var list_installed | grep emergency

does not indicate that it is installed.

same with virtual heyboard...empty Directory in /var/usr/..../apps/
    ipkg -o /var list_installed | grep keyboard

    indicates
    org.webosinternals.patches.add-onscreen-keyboard - 1.2.1-1 - Virtual Keyboard

So I guess I can remove empty directory as well..

Good idea.. I've just added it.

    ______________

Here is potentially the final version before posting on PreWare repository this weekend.

    v0.2.6i
    - added size of "apps on /media" in var report if using "mvapp doctor media"
    - state that apps/attachments are moving in link/unlink email
    - changed conditions/thresholds for recommendations

Please test by pasting the the below at Linux prompt to install test version. Use 'ma' as the command instead of 'mvapp'.
    Code:
    mount -o remount,rw /
    cd /tmp
    wget http://gitorious.org/webos-internals/mvapp/blobs/raw/master/mvapp
    chmod 755 mvapp
mv mvapp /usr/local/bin/ma #or name to whatever you'd like, using ma as shortcut
    ma

    Looking good.

    var used:      64MB 26%
    var avail:     184MB
    app used: 4MB on /var
    email used: 156MB on /media
    attach used: 8MB on /media
    var tmp used:  0MB
    opt used: 15MB

    Recommendations...

    - Attempt to keep "var used" below 100MB.

This report is available on media
    drive as... varreport.txt
    root@castle:/tmp#
Xorg, we may want to consider a new Homebrew App type of thread for this? There was actually a request over in the fair dinkum thread that it be put somewhere easily identifiable for people. Or maybe we can get this thread as a sticky here in the forum it's in?

haven't tested 2.6h or 2.6i but I am not seeing any problems moving mail to media, and any of the apps I moved. I did have to mount media/internal as root because I had previously changed fstab to mount ownership as user. Thanks for all the hard work with the app limit!

    ^Thanks for testing.

SirWill, I'll probably create another thread for next release, either in the Homebrew or in webosinternals forum since mvapp is in that repository. I didn't plan for this to take off with the masses until seeing what Palm does in next webOS release.

Since mvapp now moves email, I'm wondering if I should change the script to 'varmgr' with shortcut of 'vm' as it is becoming a var storage manager. I think I'll stick with 'mvapp' for this release but may change it by the next one. Am open to other ideas.

If it can live happily in the webos-internals forum, I believe that is where it should live. I like the idea of naming it varmgr.

It will be interesting to see what Palm can do about these /var storage issues. If the don't address it satisfactorily and we need to keep this, it will be time to consider a GUI for it.

I have been following this thread closely and I am at my end! Frustrated. I have a pre that I cannot install any official apps b/c I continue to get the dreaded memory message. I have tried this solution and moved everything I could - (apps). Everytime I try moving some of hacks and commands and patched I get error messages. That being said, I have about 1gb used of memory and still not enough??

Does anyone have a fix??? Please?

^^^ can you output the status report and post it here for us to see? Also stay tuned, I think there will be a new version that will give more information and be more helpful this weekend. Have you also installed Fair Dinkum? You might want to use that in addition to this mvapp.

We will work with you and help you figure this out. Don't stress it yet.

FYI: The functionality of the Fair Dinkum App Limit package has now been incorporated into the latest version of the Package Manager Service (that's 0.9.12). Preware itself is unchanged.

I've released v0.3.0 to the webosinternals repository and it should appear in homebrew installers (PreWare, etc) later today or tomorrow. If you'd like to install from Linux now, paste the following at a prompt...

    Code:
    mount -o remount,rw /
    cd /tmp
    wget http://gitorious.org/webos-internals/mvapp/blobs/raw/master/mvapp
    chmod 755 mvapp
mv mvapp /usr/local/bin/ma #or name to whatever you'd like, using ma as shortcut
    ma
Note that the command is 'ma'. You can rename to whatever you want.

After it appears in PreWare, I'll start a new thread in Homebrew or in webosinternals thread.

v0.3.2 is now on PreWare. I've also created a new thread here for end users...

    http://forums.precentral.net/webos-i...nk-method.html

This 'development' thread will still be used to test versions in development and discuss ideas for new features. The other thread is for those using the release version availble on PreWare. Please help out others in that thread if you're familiar with the tool. Thanks to everyone who has helped up to this point. If I've missed you in the credits and you helped out, let me know and I'll add ya. xorg

Sorry for the ignorant question, but a tad confused on the cleanup option. So it says to first delete the app in the normal way from launcher with the orange key + d but then is the linked app still over on the usb media? It looks like if I run mvapp clean it'll delete everything I have for linked apps rather then just those I've deleted from the /Var side? It says you can do mvapp clean domain.appname but I'm having a hard time knowing what exactly the app name is. I can list all linked apps and it still shows the vino app in the list even though I deleted from the launcher and it disappeared there. How do I remove only this app from the linked usb side? Is there an easy way to do this?
    Thanks,

I just can't stop adding new features. Here's a new development version....

    v0.3.3a
    - 'mvapp search appname' now best guesses apps, try it by supplying partial app name
    - 'mvapp doctor' now shows # of apps installed/linked
    - report now goes to .rtf so that it opens WordPad in windows (better format)

Please test by pasting the the below at Linux prompt to install test version. Use 'ma' as the command instead of 'mvapp'.
    Code:
    mount -o remount,rw /
    cd /tmp
    wget http://gitorious.org/webos-internals/mvapp/blobs/raw/master/mvapp
    chmod 755 mvapp
mv mvapp /usr/local/bin/ma #or name to whatever you'd like, using ma as shortcut
    ma
Go for it... Am open to suggestions for improvement. Thanks.

I have not moved any applications to /media/internal yet, so when I use the "mvapp lm", I get the following error message:

    Code:
    mvapp version: 0.3.3a
    Generating list, hold please.
This may take up to a minute...
    /usr/local/bin/ma: cd: line 946: can't cd to /media/internal/.apps
ls: /media/internal/.apps: No such file or directory
Other than this, things seem to be looking good.

    Thanks... plee3

    ^Thanks...

Fixed and now available as 0.3.3b. Re-install with instructions back two posts.

This was working until recently, and now I get "cannot be moved because it contains special attributes" for any app I try to move. Any ideas? I suppose it's possible I changed some attributes at some point, but if so, what attributes should the apps have to be movable?

^That's how it's suppose to behave. Basically you have moved all apps that can be moved. Some apps cannot be moved and the script deals with it properly.

Run 'mvapp doctor'. If 'var used' is well below 100MB, you are in good shape. If not, consider moving email if you haven't already.
