if you can download the pre web doctor, you can use pull out the novaterm program. this will allow you to talk to your pre using terminal in osx. follow the instructions here, even though they are depreciated, they will get you pointed in the right direction.:

    www dot webos-internals dot org/wiki/Accessing_Linux_From_OSX

    palm dot cdnetworks dot net/rom/pre_p100eww/webosdoctorp100ewwsprint.jar

then you can follow the instructions here:

    www dot webos-internals dot org/wiki/Accessing_Linux_Using_Novaterm

if you can get novaterm running, you can do anything you want / need.

you might want to take a look at this post to help automate setting up ssh and optware.

    www dot webos-internals dot org/wiki/Next_steps

(obviously replace the "dot" with ".")

did you try extracting the NovacomInstaller.pkg out of WebOSDoctor.jar and just installing that? It's under the resources directory, then NovacomInstaller.pkg.tar.gz. It should install in the /opt directory on your mac. (/opt/nova/bin then in terminal ./novaterm)
