Hmm, is there a way to view the .db file in a text editor like notepad++ or anything?

no, as it is a sqlite3-file, but you can use this handy tool:
h t t p://sqlitebrowser.sourceforge.net

Has a patch been created to change the Bookmark icon to a photograph/ homemade icon ? A search has revealed nothing.

I wonder if this would work in 2.1.0...

Also, wouldn't the bookmark image change once you visit the page? For me, all the bookmark images update dynamically based on the last time I'd visited the page.

I'd do this if I knew they wouldn't change. Because this is awesome.

they do go back...I found that out after half hour of following through.. But a few posts back mentions another way using a database?...but the link is dead..
