Palm has a very specific set of design, testing and support requirements that may keep a lot of homebrew apps out of the catalog. I plan on releasing anything I make through the catalog, but a lot of people may not want or be able to.

It's the last two sections of this that get me worried.

Palm Developer Agreement Altered

Does being in the catalog mean that the app will always cost money?

Open distribution sounds great, and I really hope that they continue to allow it, but I wonder what crooks will exploit if we are allowed to install just anything.

PalmOS survived quite well for a full decade without (intentionally) malicious code being a problem.

However, PalmOS was not multitasking. A poorly written program that steals CPU cycles in the background can pull down the whole Pre experience. We had crap programs like that pretty early and often on the PalmOS. It was easy to recognize them, because nothing else was running. It will be harder on WebOS without a good code review and testing.

I came from a Windows Mobile phone and over there you installed whatever you wanted, and it all multitasked. You install a new program, the next day your phone isn't acting right - go back and uninstall it. Simple.

Couple more...

SO CLOSE! Would LOVE to be able to say that the homebrew community has more apps than the app catalog.

Any way to count the number of downloads? After all, it's one thing to claim more applications, and quite another to claim a significant number of installations.

I count 28 as I don't think it's proper to count SimplyFlipFlops and Tip Calc *Redux* (with its decimal/zero bug) in the official count.

I think we should count conservatively to make the celebration uncontestable.

I updated my list post again, too.
