While we are on the subject of Facebook and https, I have noticed something odd. On my Pre2 running 2.1 the Facebook app doesn't show photos or profile pics (that I've noticed). The same pics work fine (there are some that don't, but that's not new) on my Pre3 with 2.2.4. Wondering if this is a common experience on 2.1 or if it's another thing on my FrankenPre2 that isn't quite right. I believe my Verizon Pre2 has the same issue. Since I've been poking around looking into the contact sync problem, I have been looking at logs with Lumberjack, and noticed this error message:

    [2014-02-20 21:06:24] (Facebook) File was corrupt:* https://scontent-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hpho...17857213_n.jpg
Initially when pasting in the browser, I got an error saying unable to verify certificate or something. I re-accepted the Facebook SSL cert, and after that it worked fine in the browser, but still fails in the app.

Confirmed the VZW Pre 2 with 2.1 has the same problem. The only difference so far is my Sprint Pre 2 synced all of my Facebook contacts.

That used to happened with my old Pre2 phone(running 2.1v) on Verizon, there an error or corruption with the Facebook that prevented from viewing photos on the app. Mysteriously as it may sound, that doesn't happened on WebOS devices running V2.2.4 like my Palm Pre 3.....

I have more strange behaviour on my veer (webOS 2.1.2). If I am connected to the network via wifi I have no photos and profile pict. ,but when I'm connected to the GSM network that everything is OK.

Matt, do you mean Synergy or the app? I guess the app? At least on my pre-https Pre 3 both are fine. Can check fresh one when I get home if it helps. If I can fetch the app. Synergy photos were fine.

Though yeah, weird. I thought https broke app photos for everyone? I don't remember anymore.

That is pretty odd, though I too have had other things that worked on one connection but not the other. (Though I can't think of one right now)

Talking about the app - I clarified my first post to make that clear. Oh wait, you mean contact photos in synergy don't you? Yes, those are working fine -- that was one way to identify quickly that they were syncing, because most of my Google contacts don't have photos, so they jumped out at me right away. I doctored the Verizon Pre2 with a 2.2.4 metadoctor today, and sure enough, photos now work in Facebook, but I can't sync the contacts at all, as it seems to be immediately erroring out with what looks like a mojo-framework error, which I'm going to post in the Fracebook contact thread. I haven't gotten any of my other 2.1 devices to sync contacts at all

What do you mean by pre-https Pre3?

My old, daily driver. The one that's been continuously logged in since before you, mr-scorpio, et al noticed the https and other issues on new devices. As far as I've been able to tell so far, the old one's not having any issues at all, app or otherwise. That may just be because old stuff was already loaded.

Based on what you say, I guess the fresh 2.2.4 Pre 3 won't have trouble with the app either.

Did you ever check your other Pre3? I'm pretty sure this was resolved in 2.2 based on what I've seen.

I was looking at this again recently and noticed a bunch of curl SSL error messages in Lumberjack when I start the Facebook app on 2.1. I found this interesting. I really want to figure this one out, because I don't want to go back to 2.2.4 on my Pre2.. unless I can somehow hack the 2.1 phone app onto 2.2.4.
  10.    #10
Well the problem seems to be either above or below curl, because I copied the curl binary and library files from 2.2.4, and after grabbing a new dependent library (libWebOsProxy.so), get the same error. I'm not a linux guru so I don't know what else is in the stack.

FWIW, check the ssl version being used and make sure the phone's using the version expected by the server?

Just a shot in the dark. I have to use a command line cURL post on my Pre 3 to get past the wifi portal page at work every 3 months. The darn web form itself never posts for some reason (the submit button doesn't work in the browser). While doing that, I found I had to manually force sslv3 (-3 option) to get it to post.

Related troubleshoot: if you can glean what url curl is posting to and what fields it needs, try running a curl command from the linux line on the phone to that url. It may just be you need to pin the ssl version to get it to say something besides "bad ssl version." Then do Matt magic to patch things so the right ssl version is used (which yeah, maybe impossible in easy ways).

Yet another post relating to paranoia that we've been abandoned for even the smallest things.

I may need help with that. I have figured out Wireshark enough to capture Forums traffic from the emulator, but not sure about capturing https traffic. Can it sniff all traffic on the wireless network by any chance or would I have to capture at the router?

If you are able to route traffic through a proxy you could give fiddler a try. I have an old version which was free, now it is owned by Telerik and I don't know if there's still a free version.
have successfully looked at the traffic of a https-website some days ago.

What T-Pad said. 'Cuz yeah, I have no idea. I just scoped the html of the portal page to get the URL the form was trying to post to then tried curling it myself to see what was wrong. If somehow you can browse the source/jsjsjs $of$ $the$ $app$ $you$ $might$ $find$ $the$ $same$, $though$ $that$'$s$ $probably$ $rough$ $since$ $it$'$s$ $likely$ $dynamic$.

Yeah, I dunno. You're prolly right and need to sniff the traffic.

Something I haven't done and I don't know why is run that url from the first post through curl or wget on the phone.. I bet it is getting the same cert error the browser does. I recall reading recently a post on the old Palm dev forums that ajaxcall (I think) can't prompt to trust the cert, but you would think once trusted it would use it. I think I already ruled out curl and the certs themselves, as I copied both from a working 2.2.4 device and still get the error. Gonna try this now.

Of course.. curl at the command line downloaded the image in the first post successfully. I guess that puts the problem between the app and the SSL stack? We know the app is putting a valid URL in the image viewer, because that is the URL that was logged...

    what's the ssl error?
  19. #19
    Hello,

I am in the same case as you with my Veer under 2.1.1. No photos on Facebook !

I tested with one 2.1.1 under virtualbox and sames problems. So I used the files of version 2.2.4 of Veer.

/etc/ssl with all certs. The three libraries in /usr/lib/purple-2 about SSL, and no results.

I also tried to use all the libraires of the 2.2.4 in /lib/ and there too, no results.

    I found nothing with wireshark

    I continue my research

Yeah same things I tried so far. I wish I knew which files in 2.2.4 fixed this issue.. I will keep looking as well.
