    Any suggestions on doing this with the consideration the majority of files I'll be playing are .mkv or .m4v format.

    KalemSoft Media Player should be able to handle your requirements. They have a free test application on their web site that you can try before you buy.

    For some reason the audio is slow on it. I guess its better than nothing
