I am having the same problem. I installed Need For Speed today (before I read this forum!)

While it works it is really impressive, I love to tilt control (for lack of a better term.) But I have yet to complete 2 laps of the first race without it crashing on me.

I have NO patched on my phone, only a few Homebrew apps, none working while I played Need For Speed, so it can't be a multi-tasking issuse. Have tryed restarting the phone to no avail. Of note the battery drained to 50% durring the long down load, I am recharging it now, maybe that will make a difference - I doubt it.

I also went to EA's support page, Unfortunatly I have been there for PC based games - Not impressed then, Less impressed now. No way to enter the carrier, or platform, so I can't sent my E-Mail.

If anyone out there comes up with an easy fix, let me know, Failing that - Is there any way to get my $10 back????

I just got out of a chat session on the EA site. I've never dealt with them before, but if this is indicative of their support, good luck everyone.

Hi, my name is Carol. How may I help you? [09:47:42 AM]
    : hi carol [09:47:49 AM]
: I have a Palm Pre, and yesterday of course the newly-minted Need For Speed game came out, so I purchased & downloaded it [09:48:10 AM]
: It crashes about a minute or so into the game. I can tell you what I've done to try and get it to work but nothing's helped [09:48:45 AM]
: Also looking at the reviews in the App Catalog, out of 300 or so reviews, only two or three mention this problem. On the Precentral forum, there's probably 10 or so people with it [09:49:18 AM]
: Error message: "NFSU has closed unexpectedly" [09:49:29 AM]
Carol: In order to research this issue further we will need information called dxdiag.exe.
    To do this:

    1) Go to Start -> Run.
    2) In the box, type the following: dxdiag
    3) Click 'OK'
    4) Click the 'Save All Information' button on the first screen of the application.
    5) Then on top of the 'Save As' box that pops up, select Desktop (if it's not set to save there already), then click Save. [09:48:57 AM]
    : dxdiag.exe? Are you a human being? [09:50:14 AM]
    Carol: Yes. [09:49:42 AM]
: Then a human being would know that this is a Palm Pre we're talking about, not a PC. [09:50:46 AM]
Carol: I am forwarding your issue to correct dept they will contact you through email. [09:52:19 AM]
: Email's not very prompt. Is there a reason you didn't read what I typed at the beginning of the chat, when I identified it as a Palm Pre issue? [09:53:34 AM]
Carol: We are different issue for handling Palm Pre issue. [09:54:14 AM]
: You should also be obligated to at least read what your customers tell you and respond appropriately instead of copy/pasting instructions like a computer. [09:55:40 AM]
    : Anyway, thanks. [09:55:43 AM]
Carol: Yes, you are right. [09:57:36 AM]
    '' disconnected ('Concluded by End-user'). [10:01:10 AM]
    I'm calling them next.

no real issues here with NFS..works like a charm for me
  4. #24
I have the same crashes (after about a minute) with NFSU, only about 6 patches loaded. I have done all the typical reboots, etc. I have never installed the tethering thing. I hope they fix this, I'll be shying away from 3D games until these stability issues get resolved. However, X-plane did seem to work fine, no crashes in my one 10 minute flight so far.
  5. #25
quick update: Tried airplane mode, but I still couldn't finish the first race.
  6. #26
I tried removing the My Tether wifi patch, but that didn't solve the problem.
    * Stuck patches? Partial erase worked for me.
    * Stuck virtual keyboard? Partial erase AND folder deletion worked for me.

    - Restarted the phone quite a few times
    - Removed/replaced battery
    - Uninstalled/reinstalled NFSU

It still crashes with the same error folks here have gotten about a minute in. I was able to finish the first race once before the crash, most times it crashes right around lap 1.

Like I mentioned, I have not had good outcomes with my past encounters with EA's support site. I am at work now, and the web filter prevents me from accessing "game" sites, so I will have to wait till I get home.

I had thought of that as well, but someone in this thread said they didn't have any patches, just a couple homebrew programs.

I just spent 50 minutes between being on hold and talking to a rep on the phone, and the resolution is what the website support person said: all mobile support is via email, but he's going to escalate it.

So I told him straight up: these games are a hot commodity to webOS users right now because these are the first major releases to come along. They went live yesterday, and when you have problems, if you click the support link it sends you to an iPhone support page. Support people both online and via phone aren't trained to handle it, this is unacceptable.

He said they'd contact me within 24 hours. Yippee. Here's his followup email.

    Hello ,

I have forwarded your information to our Tier 3 support specialists for further troubleshooting. Please allow 48-72 hours for them to research your issue and reply back to you via e-mail. We appreciate your patience as we work together to resolve this issue.

If you have any other questions or concerns while waiting for our response, then please update this incident and let us know. Your reference number for this issue is 100108-024188.

Like I mentioned, I have No patches. My Pre reports that I have 5.9 GB available. And I have not gotten to complete the first race. Have restarted the phone, but have not tried to uninstall/ reinstall the game. I'm in the middle of a battery recharge now, I figured I'd try that first.

I highly suspect it's due to background processes / running out of memory.

I just was connected to my Pre via PuTTY and running top. When running NFS, the free memory dropped from 55000k free to around 6000k free. That 6000k though wasn't steady, it jumped from between 10000k to 2000k at different points. When it hit 2000k, about 5 seconds later the card closed itself, I got that the application had an unexpected error, and then free memory jumped from 2000k back to 55000k.

I suspect we're stuck with games crashing occasionally on the original Pre. :-/

Just downloaded NFS and install went fine. I've never played NFS so I need some info. The program starts with you driving thru town over and over. Is this considered level 1 or just an intro? How do you get to further levels? It seems I've done a dozen laps and nothing else happens.

It's a tutorial, you have to do the techniques it's teaching you to do.

Does anyone tried to remove themes, patches, programs (My Tether) and then having NFS working? I was able to download the game and installed (twice already), but nothing happens after tapping the icon.

Just out of curiosity, what services do you have running in the background, do you have the virtual keyboard installed?
There's got to be a way to increase the available memory to apps.

For the people with problems installing the application. There's a new method used by webos 1.3.5 that moves applications to a different partition on your phone.
Until there is a way of easily cleaning out old install files from this partition trying to install the same application over and over again really wont do any good.

The only solution I see is if you either hard reset the phone to remove applications or just doctor the thing to 1.2 or lower and then update or doctor back up to 1.3.5.

Since from what I've read, 1.3 and up don't touch the user partition of the pre, I'm not sure if simply doctoring with 1.3.5 will solve everything. 1.2 and lower totally wiped the device clean.

I hope someone will correct my if I'm wrong.

I've got a ton of things going off in the background.

Twee fires off every 15 minutes, Weather Dashboard every hour, WootOn has nightly updates at 1am, plus having AIM, Yahoo, Gtalk connected, plus two email accounts that come as they arrive.

7 or 8 crashes out of 10 for me seem to occur when something else is going on.
