I just wanted to say how absolutely amazing this game is. It's by far the best app on the Pre. There are just so many cool features in the game: achievements, chatting, experience points, etc. And this game is just plain addictive.

I read through some of the recent pages of this thread and it seems cheating is a big discussion here. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a good answer for this. In any online game, certain people will find ways of cheating. Having a rating system is not a good idea because if someone is legitimately beating everyone, they may get rated low and that's not fair either.

Believe it or not, there are some people who have tremendous vocabularies. Also, you do start to pick up words as you play these types of games. For instance, several years ago I played a ton of online scrabble and I learned certain words such as "qat" that I would have never known to play otherwise.

Using "qat" or "qoph" is one thing, DanPLC, but throwing out "words" like "sweven", "kalifs", and "sozines" just to name a few I've seen in the last two days are evidence that the game is overrun with scrabble champions, cheaters, or some combination thereof. I'm sure there's one or two people who can pull these out of a massive memory bank, but there aren't dozens of them.

It's not that people *can't* memorize these and tens of thousands of other words, it's just the sheer improbability that they'd be able to do it for hand after hand with six and seven letter words that are archaic, obsolete, etc.

You're right that distinguishing among these groups is bound to result in false positives, but I'd argue the game would still be improved even if one or two scrabble masters got banned as a result. That might not be a popular thing to say, but that's how I feel.

I agree completely. The number of legitimate scrabble wizards that would be tagged as cheaters is nowhere near the number of actual cheaters that would be tagged.

However, because the possibility is real, I wouldn't ban them. I'd just publish the ratings by other players and let us make our own decisions. If I see a player at the table who has 100 votes against him, I don't care whether he's an actual cheater or just good -- I don't want to play with him. That's what I do now when I see a player that's level 27... I don't think anyone is at level 27 this early in the life of the game unless he's received some "help".

Still a great game. The best on the Pre by far. I haven't let the cheaters ruin it for me.

In the end, I think this is the best option.

Someone else mentioned something to the effect, forget cheating, I don't even want to be stuck in a game with a great scrabble player.

All of us should be improving our vocabularies. We all start out in different places. I think I am really good at this game. Then I find myself in games where I am just saying, "Man! You are a lot smarter than I am." I have a solid word and I scramble to find a better one. Or there is a word on the table that is better that I didn't know worked.

I felt like a cheater the game I used "pht" because I saw someone use it against me (whom I seriously suspect was cheating). But once I learned it, wasn't I able to use it? I have also used "FEZ". I think I looked it up and it was an old styled hat. But there will be words I can use that I can't define. I just remember being beat by the words before.

I think it is fair for someone to think that I am ruining their fun even though I am not cheating. They would prefer to not play against me. Sure, they select do not play against this person. Or I do the same to them. That seems a good way. Nobody has to wear a scarlet letter, but people refine how their tables are set.

Also, I see a system that "tries" to place similar levels against one another.

AND... a higher level could just mean that they play more often. I have several friends added, but one in particular is ALWAYS on. Others come online every so often. (BTW- Hi Joelle, if you are a member here as well - I am sure many here have played with her. She is probably like Myspace's Tom of Word Ace).

DanPLC - I might be mistaken, but I thought we played together a few nights ago. "Hi!"

I know I played DKatman the other night. There were some good rounds.

I'm not a Scrabble ace by any means, but I play occasionally, and I've been accused of cheating when I've used words that are well-known to Scrabble players, like "qis." Like DKatman says, that's part of the game--when you've seen someone else use it, you use it next time.

But there's definitely something going on when people throw down obscure word after obscure word, some 6 or 7 letters . . . Yeah, they're either Scrabble aces, or, more likely, cheating with anagrammers.

When I was playing, it was easy to rate a player on my own. The choice of winning words is a key indicator. You can also judge their betting patterns, how much money they have, losing words and garbage words...if any. Their level can add to the story too.

I think giving them more money and raising the stakes is not a part of the solution. I deleted the game from my Pre and iPhone because of the lack of efforts to solve the problems of cheaters and people who take too much time. I don't need to spend 5 minutes to loose one hand to a cheater.

My disclaimer...I love the concept of this game. I wish it worked for me. If they decide to refine the game, I'm all in.

I just had a conversation with a guy who used the "word" "nephtol":

    Me: nepthol?
Guy: No idea, that's just what the word gen said.
Me: At least you admit it... why bother playing with a word gen?
Guy: Why not? Makes it more fun. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
So, that's what we're up against with these losers. Can't win legit, so cheat, and somehow that equals "fun." I can't imagine what's wrong with their personal lives to make such activity "fun", but I guess they're taking a break from their normal jobs as forum trolls and Wikipedia vandals.

I don't know if the cheaters regularly surf here or not but I'm willing to give my number and anyone can add me as a friend. Just a warning though I won a game with the word rawhide once (34 points). I'm 11690

    02589,

I like the game. I suggest you just try to spend more time finding a better table.

Since first posting anything about cheaters, i have had solid games (I think). They may have been better than me, but they were probably jsut good players.

And there is still satisfaction when I was still beating people cheating (well one or two hands anyway. If they don't get the cards, they don't get the cards).

    Tony, great dialogue!!!

Mike....added. Once I saw your avatar for the game, I recognized you. That was fun playing. I hope to run into you again.....and of course, jsut logging in to do that, I had the invite from Joelle. She is always on there! Is she a real person?!?!

Just got played by some one who was consistently wining, but I had to wonder why he/she was only raising small amounts when he/she was throwing down seven letter words?

List of people I suspect cheating. I agree with the personal avoid system. It would be a great additon.

Also, Jacqui has a pornographic picture. Its very offensive, please take action. BigDaddy and Rikserio are fellow witnesses
