I have hit the app limit, but I also download homebrew apps. It's really odd, as I look at all my apps and though I don't want to delete some, I see apps I NEVER use like Evernote, AP News, Spades, etc. So why do I keep them. It's one of those strange pack rat like feelings. I just NEED to have it, just in case. LOL. I'm not fretting over the limitation at this time, but definitly believe Palm should open the drive space up for however we like to utilize the storage whether it be for apps, photos, music, porn, etc. LOL!

[QUOTE=Jawbox;1908402] I know this isn't an iPhone, but we should expect that users are going to complain in any area where the Pre isn't up to the standards of the iPhone.

The Pre is the iPhones biggest competitor in my head. And if Palm wants to compete, it needs to be able to do the same stuff if not more.

I believe this statistic, but what's even scarier is the fact that I know people that have spent $$$ on apps and such and end up using maybe a dozen or so at different times and hardly any of the ones they spent all the moolah on.

As much as I read about the Pre prior to its launch, I have never seen any reports that the user would not have the full 8GBs available for any use.

I read about the app limit within the first weeks of the phone coming out, was mentioned in several articles relating to early homebrew stuff.

If you're THAT upset about it, there are workarounds, just go snooping around the forums. Most solutions require you to root and rearrange some of the file structure.

FWIW I have 40 apps installed and have yet to have an issue, and have had many more than that at various times (but I do not have a firm count on what was the max I had installed). Is it a space issue, or an app # issue? This is something I've not heard answered clearly as of yet.

When I spoke with Palm over the phone, they told me the Pre has NO limit to the number of apps. Unless the memory is used up, keep 'em coming. The only problem, the designed the phone with only 233mb of space for this feature. What a dumb error on their part, why not include the 8gb of memory for your personal USB drive files. If you don't believe me, call them. Thats just what they told me.

I shouldn't have to root my phone, or have to learn how to do it. being an average user, i just want to use all the space they kinda gave me

A few moments of using the search function found these threads pertaining to app limits. I used the key words app limit.

As stated above, the space was dedicated for approved apps, not Homebrew. That said, there are options. You can increase the amount of space available for apps. Keep in mind though, that's likely to cause problems if/when Palm does a push that reconfigures the LVM settings.

Again, the problem is you are installing non-approved apps. Nothing wrong with that, but it's a bit premature to expect Palm to "fix" a problem that you (and others) have installing non-authorized applications.

but is it really that hard to delete a few apps and then just download them when you actually need them. It takes all of about 10-15 seconds. Makes you wonder, if you really need the apps on your device at all. Just download when needed. Of course it only works if your in a data area or wifi.

Nowhere does Palm state that there are limitations to what the memory can be used for. They promote it as a device that has 8gb of memory, period. If you go to the Palm web site, look at the specifications for the Pre, you will see that it says 8gb memory, approx. 7gb user available, with a footnote: "Estimate subject to change based on system software and application usage."
I suppose they don't mention it because their main competition from Apple has no limitation on how many apps or the amount of memory it can use for them. If you have a 8gb, 16gb or 32gb iPhone, you fill the whole thing up with apps if you like.

Those are links on this site. I think the poster was interested in official Palm or Sprint links that relate to the amount of memory available. I'd be interested in seeing those as well since this device has always been marketed to the mass public as an 8gb device, running WebOS, having the ability to multi-task (yet no mention is made of only having less than 5% of it's memory available for applications).

Nice try, though I fail to see any posts prior the to Pre's launch -you did mention "research before you buy", didn't you?

Unless the OP bought his phone within the last month or so, your "research" is a bit useless.

How do you know that? I have the previously released (briefly) 1.2 on my phone and the partition that holds the apps only has 248MB of space so no it's not fixed (at least not in the 1.2 I have).

The limit applies to all apps, whether they are "approved" (whatever that means) or not. Also remember that Palm has said that it's perfectly OK to side-load apps from other sources other than the App Catalog so it's not people are doing anything against Palm's rules by installing homebrew apps as you seem to be implying.

I think the point hparsons is trying to make is that Palm will probably increase the partition to accommodate however many official apps are available (until no longer feasible).

They've said they're okay with homebrew apps but did not say they would do anything special to support them, i.e. increase app partition space for non-official apps.
