    These were great renders.

In retrospect palm should have realized they wouldn't be able to compete in the hardware space against apple, Samsung, htc, motorola, etc and should have released webOS to all manufacturers, like what Google did with android. WebOS as an Os was so hot when it was announced back in Jan 2009 that I think many vendors would have jumped on board instead of going to android.

    But oh well.

    Here we are, unfortunately

    I'll counter that...

What HP should have done is put the effort and support originally pledged to webOS into their efforts. That was the failure. It should have been an Applesque system where HP controlled everything from hardware to software to create a brand that could not be diluted. Fragmentation and brand dilution ala Android would not have made a stronger product for HP - only a weakening of what they shelled out $1.2 Billion for.

It may have gotten webOS into more hands... May have. But it would have been second tier with every OEM that currently was making Android handsets. Good for the consumer, bad for the OS. It most likely would have been treated to feature phone level support by third party players looking to make a few fast dollars to fuel their supremacy war in the Android arena.

But it would still be around in the main stream and I would have a choice of picking a webOS phone instead of what's out now... No webOS phones.

I'm pretty sure that new WebOS hardware, particularly smartphones, would have extended the live of WebOS, at the very least, even if the hardware wasn't top tier, but only mid tier.

All we WebOS users wanted was hardware that worked reliably with decent battery life and WebOS on it. If the hardware was a bit behind the "state of the art" hardware, that would have been fine, I believe, for most of us, as long as what we had had no overall issues and wasn't laggy.

My designs above were state of the art 1, 2 and 3 years ago, but not today, yet, I'd take any of them with WebOS on them right now instead of my Samsung Galaxy S2 with Android.

    Really.

    Blast from the past!
If nothing else, we can thank Ms Whitman for open-sourcing webOS & HP generally for continuing life support with a mostly functional app catalogue. But HP must now be irrelevant to webOS' future, having sold the OS team to LG and the patents to Qualcomm.
The petition mentioned above expired in February with 2320 signatories.
LG's TV experiment seems to be working out for them and maybe they will eventually have an eco-system that will lead to a phone, but right now, webOS-Ports remains the best hope for a mobile operating system.

Hardware will be a case of choosing from existing models on which Open webOS can be installed. Or maybe project Ara...

Man uses Raspberry Pi to build actual working cellphone for $158 | Ars Technica

Please note, the attempt to port OwOS to the Pi stalled due to I think lack of Qt support, so not impossible, but not yet!

Last time it was tried it was still with old LunaSysMgr (QT 4.8.x based) and not LunaNext (QT 5.2.x based). Resources in the team are limited, so focus is on adding features, solving bugs instead of putting a lot of effort in new devices for the moment. Anyone is welcome to try to port to the Pi of course when they have time and the team is happy to provide the needed guidance ;-)

    Raspberry Pi - WebOS-Ports

So, 'easy' if Qt 5.2 has made it to RaspberryPi... EDIT: It seems that is!

The advantage of this port would be less about home made phones than putting the system in the hands of a wider development community.

    Anyone want to try?

I hope this isn't too off topic! ;-)

Well, it looks like webOSNation is now off of the bottom of the Mobile Nations pages. I don't think this site is referenced on any Mobile Nations page anymore. It's kind of like that Tom Hanks character in The Terminal.

Yes, we were still listed on a couple of locations Iike the MobileNations.com page, but it looks like that was remove also. It looks like this ship was cut loose after the pirates left and now we're drifting in the fog with no power, no lights, and no provisions. So... who brought cards and rum?

If they are trying to make us mad so we leave because they want to shut the site down, I guess the only thing to do is post more than ever! #mindlessrant

Not trying to make anyone leave! They are actually still supporting us by keeping the site alive. Otherwise what happened to webosroundup would happen to this site. They turned out the lights and locked up. Lights are still on here!

That was one of my favorite sites! Amazing it's still up-like a creepy old house, stuck in time (love the front page articles-"HP Announces HP TouchPad Availability"!!).
