    I posted this as a reply to a thread about xTerm, but thought it would get better visibility here. I found that the ESC key can be simulated using:

    CTRL + SHIFT + [

    Tested in xTerm and wTerm.

    Left bracket, which is an unshifted character on a standard .us keyboard. CTRL-[ is the standard way of generating an ESC without a dedicated key.
