Last night my wife and I were a bit startled by a notification that came while we were trying to sleep. Is there any way to stop these after-hours notifications without losing them during the day?

Sounds like a possible feature to add. In the mean time if you can remember under preferences there is a notifications setting. Set it to off when you go to sleep and just remember to turn it back on when you wake up.Another option is use the silent mode switch. We will take a look at a "quiet time" feature.
