My concern is that Palm will *not* learn their lesson from the 600/650 and that they'll go cheap on the memory leaving us with all the same problems. Even after you move everything to the card, you still run into some highly useful apps which can't run from the card, can't store data on the card, etc. I, for one, do not want a Treo that's limited to basically a BlackBerry.

At least with the 700w, we won't have to deal with the near-worthless 650 cache manager. That assumes of course WM5 doesn't make things worse in some other way. Since I won't be moving to Verizon, it's kind of a moot point anyway for another 9-10 months, but this topic is definitely interesting if they come out with a 700p in parallel with the 700w.

    Thing is:

The only reason I stuck with Palm in the first place is the veritable smorgassboard of freeware apps available.

Now, I recently turned 20, and my demands have changed from my old school m100 and having nifty games, to needing a PDA phone that integrates my Outlook contacts, MS Office documents, work and personal email accounts and memos, tasks and appointments easily and reliably.

And, as a "always on my hip" media manager. Although it is not as important as it was in my HS years.

So far, the Treo models fulfill my needs as a consumer, a government servant, and a gadget fanatic - not to mention my geeky side.

    And my audiophile needs.

It just so happens that the 700w may be a greater asset in 2006 than the Treo 650.
The PalmOS is showing its age; and truthfully the only thing I will miss from a 650GSM standpoint is the one handed operation and low power consumption of the Palm Treo's.

If the WM5 Treo can match that; no more Palm OS for me. The only non-MS platform (Adobe Acrobat files; DOZENS of them a day) that I use cross-platform anyway. By the time the 700w is releases, a great deal of WM5 software will have been released.

    Tom -

Don't believe for a minute that Microsoft will allow Palm to release a hardware design that will reflect a bad image on Microsoft´s OS. You can bet that a part of the deal between Microsoft and Palm is that Microsoft has the ability to control some design aspects of the 700w. And so the process begins whereby Palm begins to be prostituted by Microsoft just as MS has prostituted and eventually assimilated so many other companies. Write it in your book.

    Okay,

    "WM5 - PPC-6700...NO MYSTERIOUS/RANDOM REBOOTS..."

    Now what?

I'll be honest...I was considering ditching "t3h Palm" and getting a GSM Wizard.
But, I like the Palm experience...rather, the form factor and execution of the Treo devices themselves.

Palm OS, WM5; doesn't matter. It's the best overall experience and integration with a cellular radio.

At this point, WM5 is the winner. So bring on the WM Treo.

    I think I'm being misunderstood!

    I like the Treo experience...not really WM5.

At this point, the superior Treo (well...for a corporate or gov enviroment) will be a WM Treo.

But I love the Palm OS...it just seems like Palm themselves is moving away from that.
But make no mistake, I've had all the Treos from 180 forward (every one except the 90) and they are what hooked me on the Treo initally and got me to pledge this brand loyalty.

I just hope that a Palm OS and WM Treo are released in tandem.

I realize this may come off as wishful thinking... but what are the chances M$ allows Palm to tweak WM5 to better operate on the Treo platform - i.e. 5-way support, Today screen updates (type to dial, etc.)... I mean, it was discussed in the press release/interviews with Shiari (sp?)

Could we be moving closer to 'Treo-type' functionality on a much more stable OS??

    Wishful thinking??

The 700w will fail if they don't tweak the winMob OS for the Treo hardware but the one handed nav is why they say they want the Treo anyway.

I think we are in agreement... it would be very nice to have current Treo functionality (plus some) on a much more stable platform.

I don't know what I'd do with myself if my Treo didn't reset daily!

    You guys are wrong here...
many things that Palm wanted to implement in past Treo versions, they dumped on the MS/Palm Task Force shoulders, they locked themselves in teh room, burned the midnight oil, and figured it out.

Hence, the SMS call response; horizontal and vertical screen modes, etc.
It was an awesome Task Force, I'd gather.

Air Force, Army, and Navy/Marine "information professionals" get together sometimes, and the product surprises everyone; since the services traditionally hate each other.

Why wouldn't mobile goodness come out of a Palm/OS "think tank"? The WM Treo is going to rock your socks off, believe you me.
