OK. Tell me if this is possible or just a dumb idea:

You know how the treo 800w (and possibly Treo Pro) can show the time while the screen is off? Would it be possible to create an e-book reader that could utilize this mode? This would dramatically reduce battery drain

Please tell me if this is a stupid idea

Hmmm... I don't know how they achieve that effect...

Seems like it would be doable. And probably for more than Treos.

That's the screensaver, and it actually helps battery life to have it turned off, so I don't know if there would be a big benefit as an e-reader.

The idea is to develop an e-book reader that utilizes that screen setting in order to save energy over traditional e-book readers that utilize bright backlight settings.

It makes perfect sense, I just don't know how readable it would be.

    Exactly.

If the background were not too dark it would be sort of like a pocket Kindle.

I personally like a bright backlight on book readers. (I sure wish Pocket E-Sword worked with WM 6.5.) But it would be a nice OPTION if WM book readers has a "battery saver" mode, that would lower the backlight and work like Kaptainchump suggested.

I think it's a very good idea. Sort of funny to say you read a book and your phone died .
