FWIW, Consumer Reports (Jan 2009) has listed the Treo 800w on their list of top smartphones of 2008.

Certainly some odd choices on there (T-Mobile Wing? Really.) but overall sort of interesting. Nice to see the Dash on there...love that phone.

Eh, I'm sure somehow this will turn into a referendum on CR very quickly, lol.

The phones were rated on 17 criteria, including voice quality, ease of use and talk time, and features like GPS navigation, camera and stereo Bluetooth. The conclusions were reached by a formula that gives more points for certain features than others.

[Edit: The ordering of the list which was originally copied/posted (from another site) was off a little bit. Turns out they weren't ranked completely in order.

Santos was kind enough to scan the actual ratings which is linked here for perusal. The results are still pretty similar though with the 800w fairing quite well.]

well well well 800w is a solid (well built) and capable device.

This one can beat iPhone only if the screen size was an inch larger !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope PALM will release a game changer on January 9th.

Except some quirks, this is the most capable phone.

I got my money's worth already, I use the Sprint TV, GPS , Email, SMS , Google MAPS , Opera , Skyfire everyday

Either there's a typo, or the Centro should be tied for #3 instead of #17.

Nice... I didn't catch that one... I find it quite interesting that all those Palm phones made the top ten but yet everyone wants to complain about Palm these days....

Just makes me love my 800w that much more... very happy with my phone!!!

Unless there's a typo in that original list, the Centro scored a 65 - same as #3 Q and Shadow.

I am not trying to dis the list but like mention it looks to be done by an elementary student. Those scores are not right and the list of devices itself are pretty weird. #2 Wing is a Mogul. Noway is that #2.

There are a couple of typos on that list (some names that were fixed by myself). It was copied from another website, so that may be the culprit.

    But the ordering is correct.

I don't have an online subscription to CR, but if someone does and can access that article, it'd help.

Perhaps the saddest thing of all is that the highest scoring smartphone in 2008 still only effectively scored a D-plus.

On the real list, the Blackberry Pearl Flip 8220 is #6 at 63 points. The Bold is #8 with 62 points. I'm not sure why the OP list is different. The Treo 800w is #11, and the iPhone is #13 with the same score. I'm looking at smartphone ratings; the list is similar but it doesn't say "best smartphones of 2008"; perhaps that's a slightly different article.

Haus, if you have a different verstion/from CR direct, PM it to me and I'll adjust the 1st post.

    Also, CR responds a bit...
    http://blogs.consumerreports.org/ele...rt_phonespdas/

Update: here is the "top 5" which is different from the 1st list

    1. Samsung BlackJack II
    2. T-Mobile Wing
    3. Motorola Q9c
    4. T-Mobile Shadow
    5. BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220

I've also seen articles with the iPhone at #11 and G-1 #12. Weird.

Here's the list. I had to zoom out in Firefox to make it fit.

Thanks. Not that I favor one particular phone over another, but it seems like this is a smartphone smackdown that ranks them mostly on non-smartphone attributes.

Using the same criteria, any flip-phone would probably spank all the smartphones listed (based on ease of use, cost and talk time). But then again CR always catered to the "just tell me what to buy" crowd.
