I read about a recent MS patch about an email bug: http://www.wmexperts.com/articles/mi...ches_seri.html.

can we apply this kind of patches or should we wait Palm to release its own version? the windowsupdate of my treo pro reports nothing.

What would be the problem with a Microsoft patch for Microsoft Windows Mobile?

Nothing, if you encounter the problem described in the patch documentation, I would apply this patch.

I applied it to my 800w with no problems.

Make a backup first, and you should be fine.

It potentially could overwrite any customisations Palm made to the OS..

This patch shouldn't effect anything that Palm's tweaked.

It does however fix a rather serious e-mail bug, if you use SMTP/POP or IMAP (exchange is not effected).

Sad that the Windows Update doesn't find the bug. Has that Update program ever found anything in the history of Windows Mobile/Pocket PC?

+1 to that. I've never found anything to update the entire time I've used WM.

The WM updater program is essentially abandonware.

It's not used because MS (for many reasons) doesn't want to blindly push stuff out because too many devices are too specific. While it's highly unlikely this patch would break something, there may be devices out there that it could, and since MS can't test each individual device they can't push to all of them.

so why such icon is still there. as a previous PalmOS user, to get addicted with WM6.1 (hey, it's not 0.1) ambiguities is a strong match.

Just because it's not used doesn't mean the capabilities of it are a bad idea, eh?

There may come a time when WM is more standardized (similar to Windows currently), in which case pushing out updates using the updater would be just like on XP or Vista.
