Palm replaced my crack Pro with a new one - hopefully it won't happen again.

I got my replacement from Dell on Monday. No cracks yet. I asked them what happens if this replacement gets cracks so soon. They said they would replace it and keep replacing them as long as it was within the 30 days of receiving them. We'll see.

Hi everybody. I got mine from Dubai a week ago, though I'm from the Phils. So far so good. No issues, no cracks. Best WM fon for me yet. My previous ones were a treo 750 and an omnia.

What are you folks doing to get Palm to replace your Treo Pros? All they are offering me is a repair with a 7-10 day wait. (edit: this includes the time required for the device to get to them. The repair time they quoted was 5-7 days from their receipt of the phone. I'm not paying to next-day ship the thing.) I have not only cracks around the buttons, but also the plastic surrounding the keyboard is peeling away from the body of the phone. I am required to carry a phone for work and I can't be without any cell phone for up to a week and a half.

When asked if replacing the phone was an option, I was told there is no stock available because the phone is so new, so all they can do is repair it. Funny, I don't see any "out of stock" messages on the Palm store or any other online vendor that sells the Treo Pro.

I tried that already. The first agent apparently noted in my case that she offered to repair the phone. Upon reading that, the second agent asked if I was calling back to arrange for the repair. When I said that I couldn't be without the phone for that many days and asked if there is any way they could replace the phone rather than repairing it, I was put on hold for more than ten minutes. When the agent came back, he said they cannot currently do an advance replacement and that my only option at this time is to ship the phone to them for repair.

He did not have a response when I stated that I knew of multiple people whose phones were replaced by Palm due to these same defects. At that point, it was about five minutes before their phone support hours ended, so I opted not to pursue it. An annoyed agent who just wants to get off the phone and go home is not likely to be your friend. :-)

I don't know what happens if I call in without referencing the case number. I would assume they would look up my serial number, find that there's an existing case associated with it, and just go by that, getting me nowhere.

I guess this is the drawback to buying an unlocked phone. At least if I got it from AT&T I could go to the store and they'd probably replace it. As it is, I need the phone for work and as I have no landline at home, it's really my only phone.

What about picking up a cheap candybar phone to swap your SIM card into for a week?

I've used my old Treo 650 several times for that exact reason, when I couldn't use my 700wx for a while.

Two weeks with new one from Dell and no crack issues. Dell was great about relacing it. They even screwed up and sent me a "second" replacement that I had to send back. They said as long as it was within 30 days of receiving the item, they will replace with no questions asked. After that I guess it's a repair issue.

According to our good friends over at Palm, there really is no pattern to indicate that the cracking is a manufacturing defect. In fact, not many people are having the cracking issue at all and apparently no one is having it show up again on replaced devices. We are all just delusional idiots. http://forums.palm.com/palm/board/me...hread.id=39312
(and both the Palm reps are pretty snotty about it. How about that for service. Not only deny the problem, but tell the customer he is a tool to boot!)

It certainly seems to be true that no-one (on Treo Central) is reporting cracks on a replacement phone. So hopefully the problem was only with early Treo Pros (mid-Nov seems to be the cut-off date at the moment).

But it's not true that it's not a manufacturing defect, nor that Palm aren't replacing Pros: we have 36 individual users reporting cracks, nearly all of them quoting their serial numbers, and over half of them with multiple cracks.

The Palm rep is struggling a bit there, he starts off saying, "There's no problem and users aren't calling and getting Pros replaced", then in a later post he finally ends up saying, "Yes but, when they are replaced, then they're OK".

2 months old, just noticed 3 cracks near the volume buttons, can't see them unless you look real close.

At least they didn't delete the thread.
The Apple forums have a reputation of deleting threads that put their products in an unfavorable light.

who do you refer to with 'they'?
TC doesnt censor on content if you think a product is faulty and have a good argument for that then it is actually appreciated so other can learn from it.
For example with this cracking issue people can check before their standard warranty runs out..

But ocassionaly we have to edit some posts if they are just to ruffle feathers rather than constructive critisism...

I believe berdinkerdickle is referring to WDW's post above, which links to a forum post on the Palm site. berdinkerdickle was commenting that, unlike some vendors which try to squash negative posts in the vendor's own forums, Palm has (so far) left these posts alone.

Yes, I agree. I thought berd meant Palm.

So far it's been two weeks with the replacement and no cracks have developed. Also, Palm showed excellent customer service in handling this. The rep was very professional and courteous. They offered the option of advance replacement or repair. I chose advance replacement. Within 5 days of calling, a new one was fedexed to my house.

I almost wish I wasn't following this thread because reading statements like that just annoy me. I've been told by two reps that advance replacement isn't possible and that my only option is shipping it in for repair, leaving me with no phone at all for likely more than a week. (Unless I do as a previous commenter suggested and buy a cheap phone to put my SIM in.) I'm waiting until after the first of the year to do anything. If I have to ship it, I'm not going to put up with holiday shipping delays, and I'm hoping -- probably in vain -- for a rep who will be able to offer advance replacement.

It is good to read that those who have gotten replacements aren't having cracking issues with them.

Got my TP on day 1. Crack appeared last week near the Wifi button, called Palm and replacement on the way, no hassle except for the wait time to speak to a human.

My first Pro had a crack 5 days after I bought it. So I just exchanged it with the reseller I bought it from. My second one (which had a serial number nearly the same as the first) developed a crack near the WiFi button. I just talked to Palm and the keyword here was "Hairline Crack" I said those words and the rep instantly repeated this is a hairline crack without being dropped. I said yes she put me on hold and came back and basically admitted this is a known issue and I had two options. First I could send my phone back and they would send me a new one upon receiving mine, 5-15 days. Or I could get an advanced replacement for $25 and securing $400 on my CC. I opted for this. We went through the all the billing and shipping info then back on hold for a minute and she cam back and said they are waiting for units to arrive from manufacturing, and it could be 15 days. I will be receiving a new barebones device so I will be reusing my battery, door and stylus.

I am wondering if the channel the phone is purchased through changes how they are dealing with the repairs. I bought mine from an Enterprise reseller. They specifically asked me where I purchased mine. They gave me no hassle whatsoever just questions here and there then a little different answer. This $25 advanced exchange has been something I have seen on several previous models I have dealt with purchasing through the same reseller. I am guessing had I bought it from Palm direct they might not have charged the fee. My discount makes it worth it in any case.

    Just another experience.
