Its in the registry hack sticky thread. Keep in mind PDA's can accept more than 160 characters but many flip phones do not which means those characters will not show after 160. After a certain number it will break the message in multiples. Basically all these variable mean they kept it at 160 for a reason. I have mine set at 250.

I don't think sprint will deliver more than 160 characters in a message.

No, but the phone can split the messages automagically.

I setup my email to forward a copy of all messages to my phone via SMS. Will this work to allow me to receive more characters from emails forwarded to my phone via sms? I don't like only receiving the first 160 characters then needing to log onto the internet just to get the rest of it.

Would I change the GetNumCharsPerMessageSMS or MaxCharsPerMsg?

I already changed the MaxPartsPerMsg to 10 so I can send multiple messages at once.

As was mentioned in the registry hack thread, instead of changing the characters per text message, change the actual number of messages that the phone can split it into. This lets you know how many messages some poor sap is going to be receiving on his dumbphone.

This hack works well, tested a few times & sends the messages together. Example, if it breaks up in 3 sets, & send it, that person received all 3 at the same time...

People please. OP is not talking about sending multiple messages. He is talking about receiving longer messages. None of you seemed to read his post. Like I said, I don't think, even if the sender sends a 500 character SMS somehow that it will be all delivered together, because of Sprint's network processing

Um, try doing a little research. SMS = 160 characters maximum per message. Every phone, no matter what. It's a standard.

Ok, so I see where it says :

To change # of characters in a text message, change the "MaxCharsPerMsg" value, however on sprint I can sent longer text but it is sent in two messages. Also some other values in this registry key.

HKLM\software\palm\varnish\messaging\sms
MaxCharsPerMsg=160
MaxPartsPerMsg=1
MaxRecipients=10
GetNumCharsPerMessageSMS=160

My question is how do I even get to that section of the phone? I havent ahd my phone long so I am just learning...

Do not change: MaxCharsPerMsg=160

Do change: MaxPartsPerMsg=1 --> 10

You cannot send messages longer than 160 characters on any carrier--they will always be divided into separate messages, hence SMS = Short Message Service.

As far as how to edit the registry, read...

"How To: Edit the Registry"

The SMS standard only allows 160 characters per message, this is not something that can be changed. It is up to the sending person's device to break that 500 character SMS into 4 messages. This is what happens when people send me texts that are more than 160 characters - I receive multiple text messages.

The hacks mentioned in this thread are to allow the functionality of breaking large messages into multiple 160-character messages so that you don't have to type out 4 different texts when you send that 500 character message. Otherwise, what the OP asked is not currently possible.
