I did put this in bugs already but I wanted to find out if anyone is experiencing this issue:

I have a 2 week old Treo Pro. I noticed when it is connected to a computer it shows charging but does not charge, in fact it appears to lose charge.

I have to charging cables both exhibit this behavior, I have tried it on my Mac Book Pro, Dell 9170 Media Center, Dell Precision 670, Dell Optiplex 755, Dell Optiplex 620 all with similar results.

I have tested it plugged into monitor hubs and directly in the CPU itself.

If I use a generic Car charger USB it charges fine.

Palm suggested Soft Reset which I already tried several times. They suggested a hard reset, which I have not done, but they are going to replace the phone anyway. Any similar experiences?

My Treo Pro charges just fine by the USB cable connected to a PC or hub.

Good, I would rather have it as a result of a defective phone than a phone wide issue. Thanks

There's a thread here, something like 'usb charging who's the culprit'
I posted in it regarding a similar issue.
My OEM usb cable would not charge my pro but a motorola one would.
It turned out to be the OEM cable was defective.

No problem for me charging either via the Palm cable or a Motorola cable.

How did you get your motorola one? I bought additional universal charger when I purchased TP, now it looks like I have TWO oem usb lines and none of them can be used to charge my TP via my regular car charger.

    Very disappointed.

I too have had my phone drain even though it was plugged in to the Palm USB cable. I was thinking it might have been my MAC but it happened on my PC too. Soft reset did not help. Changing over to a differnt computer did. No idea why.

I have had no trouble with my Walmart brand micro USB car charger.

Ok, I just drove up to the mountains using telenav... for a long time it seemed as if it was holding steady plugged into a generic car charger, then it started losing charge, then it made the sound as if it were being plugged in and unplugged several times the drive up the mountain.

Ok new question, with the screen on active, will your treo pro charge? mine shows charging but does not charge... I think this is the case when plugged in as well.

My Walmart brand car charger run iGo8, CorePlayer and the screen at 100% just fine. My Treo is my Car Stereo and GPS on my motorcycle so charging is a must.

I have the same issue with my laptop, but not my desktop machines. My guess is that the power supplied by the USB port simply isn't sufficient... perhaps a double headed cable would work?

I think you are right, it seems to depend on the power output of the USB port..
For me it works the other way around, my desktop wont charge it, but my laptop will

I recall Dell definitely had lower power usb ports that wouldn't run some non powered usb hard drives, but your mac should charge it? Mine does albeit slowly.

    Hi all,
Just to complicate life a little more, the story is not quite so simple as shorting the D+ and D- lines on the USB side if you are not using a Palm-supplied cable. The charging circuitry in the Treo is looking ofr a "sense" voltage on pin "X" at the micro-usb end - this is the same as the Motorola shown on this page:
<<damned thing won't let me post a link!>>pinouts.ru/CellularPhones-A-N/razrv3_charger_pinout. add shtml to the end yourself :-)
a cheap-and-nasty eBay cable won't work as a charging lead straight out of the box - it needs an extra resistor in the 5th pin to let the Treo know it can charge.

Could it be that it works with USB 2.0 and not with USB 1.1 or 1.0? or vice versa?

I doubt it is case of USB 1.x vs. 2.x. From what I have tested on my Mini Mac (which is USB 2.0) it will not charge when plugged directly in to the Mini Mac.

It is interesting to note that at work it ALSO will not charge when connected to a Powered USB 2.0 hub on that same MAC. However if I take that same USB hub and plug it in to my PC it does start charging.

Last of all I have a different USB 2.0 Hub at home that charges it just fine even if the computer is not connected to the hub.

NOTE: when I say "will not charge" I mean that the light on the phone shows it charging but the battery continues to drain.

    Hmmm
Looks like Palm released a patch for a similar issue on the 800W

    Wonder if this is related?

I had a similar symptom with a 750 when using a Seidio cradle. Even with the auxiliary power supply, it would not charge the 750 although the red LED was on.

There's some complex negotiation with USB as to how much current is available, and it's often the case that hubs won't provide as much as the connectors on the back of the PC. Sometimes even the front panel connectors won't work.

This one seems like a different issue. 800 was on detecting the charge. Pro has to do with the phone needing more power to charge and some usb ports can send enough and others can't. The charging configuration with the cables shorted always works.

Nope. I don't have any machines left using USB 1.x ports, so that rules that out.
