I think he may be onto something.. not a clean USB1 vs USB2 but

    USB 2 came with:
"Battery Charging Specification 1.0: Released in March 2007"

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus#Power
"On-The-Go and Battery Charging Specification both add new powering modes to the USB specification. The latter specification allows USB devices to draw up to 1.5 A (low and full speed or 900mA in Hi-Speed mode) from hubs and hosts or up to 1.8A for dedicated chargers that follow the Battery Charging Specification. The dedicated charger shorts the D+ and D- pins together and will not send or receive any information on those lines, allowing for the creation of very simple, high current chargers to be manufactured. The increased current (faster charging) will occur once the host/hub and devices both support the new charging specification."

So that may be what is needed...

FIIW my desktop is a USB1 device and does not charge and I think my laptop has USB2 and does charge...

The charging circuitry in the Treo is looking ofr a "sense" voltage on pin "X" at the micro-usb end - this is the same as the Motorola shown on this page:
<<damned thing won't let me post a link!>>pinouts.ru/CellularPhones-A-N/razrv3_charger_pinout. add shtml to the end yourself :-)
a cheap-and-nasty eBay cable won't work as a charging lead straight out of the box - it needs an extra resistor in the 5th pin to let the Treo know it can charge.

    Not quite AFAIKAFAIKAFAIK. $The$ $Moto$ $needs$ $pin$ $X$ $to$ $detect$ $whether$ $a$ $headset$ $is$ $connected$. $No$ $such$ $need$ $on$ $the$ $Palm$ $as$ $it$ $has$ $a$ $separate$ $headset$ $socket$.

What the Palm does look for is conditions on the data pins. When using a charge&sync cable, that's provided when Activesync sees a valid connection, and the Palm will switch to trickle charging mode (<500mA max). Some devices (with fast CPUs or big screens) will struggle to charge at all in this mode - at least my i780 and HTC Advantage don't.

When using a dedicated charge-only cable, with D+ and D- shorted together (or USB adapter with the same) the Palm will switch to full charging mode (>1A max), but obviously that means you can't pass data.

The best option, if you can find one, is a lead or cradle that has a switch to allow you to select modes at will.

strange thing happened... either my TP did not loose any charge syncing overnight.. or my desktop has started charging...

I did install the activesync (on win XP) though, so maybe that triggers a charge when syncing...

There is something weird happening I think. Mine is hit or miss with the same laptop or the same car charger. Like i said in my earlier posts, I have had it just navigating and it seemed to be charging, then 1/2 through the trip (after 1 hour) it definitely started losing charge.

that actually makes kinda sense.. when you battery is fully flat the lower power of your USB port will be higher than that of your battery..
Once it gets about half way it will be getting the same and stop charging..

After it has dropped a bit it probably will start charging again..

Yes, Activesync needs to be running for it to charge over a charge & sync cable.

Strange, but I'm glad I've got that sorted
