Ok, this is my first phone with enabled wi-fi, and I have no idea what to expect, but something tells me the speeds I am getting are junk.

I am pretty much sitting on top of the router, I have my phone off, and testing wi-fi from dslreports.

    Here is what I got...

    240 kbit/sec 0.509s latency Test 1

    233 kbit/sec Test 2

I think the fastest I had EVDO A was 396 kbit

    At a half a bar I had 173 kbit/sec

Should I be unhappy about these results or what?

I mean I read the following...

-EV-DO Rev. A - wherever EV-DO Rev. A coverage is available, average download speeds will increase from 400-700 kbps to 600 kbps-1.4 mbps and average upload speeds will increase from 50-70 kbps to 350-500 kbps.

So it seems, that BOTH my EVDO-A sucks, as does my wi-fi.

That right there seems worth taking the phone back. I know I have EVDO-A in my area, and also too like I said with wi-fi I was right on top of the router basically eating it.

I was actually just playing with this.

First off be sure that wifi is not in powersave mode if you are looking to benchmark.

Also, keep in mind that wifi speeds are greatly dependant on the access service that connects to the Internet. If you have 256k dsl than dont expect more than 256k.

I just pulled 1616 kbps, with 6ms latency. I am happy with that. However, my desktop is much much faster.

i question if traffic gets routed properly through wifi when it is enabled. What I am seeing is when ever loading something with data, it tries to connect to the sprint data network. it also seems to pause until that connection is made. also my speeds have not been that great. It seems like it works better when the phone portion is turned off.

is this consistent with others? is there a place in wm to configure the routing?

I'm running cable, and the service I have is 5mbps download/ 2 upload

I mean if you pulled that off your treo, something is seriously not right on my end. I pulled a 1292 kbps wired with an old 750mhz Gateway (used for just back up) and you are telling me your treo pulled quicker? NOT COOL

I then pulled a 3246 kbps with a wireless Gateway Intel Dual Core. This seems more like it.

My PC gets 20 mbps down FWIW, and that is over wifi.

Have you tweaked PIE at all for performance?

    Wow, that's quick.

I do assume that's Internet Explorer, and no I have not touched anything on it. But at the same time, that wouldn't do much if I am not getting wi-fi nor EVDO-A speeds worth crap would it?

I was just trying to illustrate that my PC is at least 10x faster.

It might- check the registry edit sticky. There is a tweak that allows PIE to download 8 simultaneous streams. (1 is default)

This is also a "out of the box" tweak in tweaks2k or sktools.

Thanks. I'd still like to see what other people get with wi-fi first before I go tweaking stuff. Camera, who cares, and GPS is sweet and all, but I wanted the faster data, and is why I purchased the phone. If my EVDO speeds are junk as well, I dont know if I want to keep the phone

I hear you, but PIE is the gateway to everything you are doing regardless of wifi or EVDO.

Can you tell me where there is a setting for power savings for wi-fi?

    Ok thanks.

Tried disabling it, launched explorer, ran the test, and got 581 kbps. Better than before, but not like some seem to be getting, and I dont know why.

I may try and test it else where. I'll see if I can get some tests running off of Best Buys network tomorrow.
