Ok. This may not be the most scientific method, but I repeated each test three times: three times off and three times on.

To do the test i began with Rev. A Turned off and I connected my phone to my laptop using phone as a modem. I then went to speedtest.net and did 3 tests to the atlanta GA server. This was indicated as the best server to use for my location by speedtest.net
    here are the results

As you can see, the upload limit was capped at around 120kbps and the ping was around 448 ms.

Next I went into ##3836# and turned on the checkbox indicating Rev A was now activated. Here are my interesting results after a test with the same Atlanta, GA server moments later.

Now the upload speed averages around 307 kbps and the ping is around 286.

My tests show that with the Rev. A box checked the effective upload speed nearly triples and the ping decreases by more than 100 ms.

Let me know what you guys think

Update: It turns out that if you don't fool with the setting, the phone has Rev. A enabled out of the box. If you check and then uncheck the box, it will disable Rev.A.

    Thanks Okashira and gksmith

From the home screen, click on the green phone hardkey and go to dialpad. Type the following characters into the phone ##3836#

You should notice a new dialog appear with an area to check a checkbox. If you didn't see the dialog appear due to error popups, just hit OK out of all of the menus until the new dialog appears. Check the box and click ok. The phone will save the settings and reset the radio.

    Viola!

When I check the box, while the data speed seems faster I have constant phone and even GPS issues until I turn it off. Many others were reporting the same.

Are you missing any calls, SMS, or anything else?

TBH, I haven't noticed a problem with missed calls, SMS or emails. Everything seems to be working normal for me. Let me add a disclaimer: I heard that those problems mentioned above may have a correlation to the data coverage type in the area. In my area, I have a heavy blanket of EVDO rev A coverage so I don't know if this is the reason why my experience with the checkbox has been flawless. I will keep you posted.

Are you in a EVDO rev A, regular EVDO, or 1xrtt area?

At work I'm in a heavy EVDO-A area. At home and on my drive home I'm in a regular EVDO area. Typically I start experiencing the issues on my drive home but not really at work.

It would seem the phone doesn't know how to use either or very well.

Maybe an application could be made to quickly enable/disable Rev A

    kaptainchump gets the cookie! lol

indeed you have found the one (major) change: this enabled faster upload speeds. Very nice.

    Before
    1157/115 ping 263
    1041/123 ping 231

    After
    1157/379 ping 220
    1053/ 327 ping 208

btw, I have no trouble with this trick.

Make sure that when checking the Rev A box that automatic remains the option when you exit. If force broadband gets selected, you will miss calls and text messages.

Make sure when you select the Rev A check box that you leave the "Automatic" setting highlighted.

Otherwise you will force only EVDO or only 1x....which will cause these symptoms.

I know this and that's how I had it on my phone; Automatic with Rev A checked.

What are you using to connect to the PC with "phone as modem"? are you using internet sharing or are you actually using dial up networking on the PC?

    Here's my first test...
RevA box off, never has been checked.

    http://www.speedtest.net/result/300683750.png
    1844/413/281 download/upload/ping

I believe that upload speed is beyond the theoretical limits of EVDO Rev. 0, so in my case, Rev A is working fine without the checkbox.

So I was getting full revA speed originally without the box checked. I enabled the box, no change. After disabling the box, im now getting reduced speeds.

now I wish I hadnt messed with it.

enabled again, getting my original good speeds.

So it sounds like Rev. A was indeed enabled out of the box but that the checkbox wasn't /showing/ that it was enabled...

That would imply that there is a glitch in Palm / MS programming causing the box not to display checked if this is, in fact, the case. I have some glitchy software at work that behaves in this manner...

    Good point.

It seems like it's enabled by default, but if you then "check" it and then "uncheck" it, it will disable it...

Okashira and gksmith get cookies too for figuring out what is really happening.

Bottom line to people worried about it: Don't mess with the checkbox and you'll be all right. But once you touch it, you'll have to make sure it is checked to get full speed.
  19. #19
Thanks for the research. Going to recheck my box.

I tested and retested (speed and latency with dslreports, so not upload speed), and saw no real difference. I think the checkbox is just there to keep us busy.
