I highly recommend those looking for a better browsing experience to try the netfront concept version, i have found that it works amazingly well on my 800w.

    Link
(scroll to bottom of the page to download)

Before you start using netfront, to optimize the experience for your treo 800w Be sure to the following:

    A) Go into Tools> Browser setting: Font, change font to Tahoma
    B) Hit the menu bottom on button right, go into Browser View
Select normal rendering or smart fit rendering , or (which ever one you prefer, i prefer normal rendering now)
    C) Hit the Menu Button again, select Memory: Set Active window to ALL and inactive window to viewport only. I also increased the memory up to 8mb, but YMMV

    edit(08/08/2008):
    e) Keyboard Shortcuts
    I - Zoom In
    O - Zoom Out
    Backspace - Back

    (10/9/2008)
DISABLE JAVASCRIPT IF YOU REALLY WANT TO SEE THIS BROWSER RIP PAGES UP AND SPIT THEM OUT*
I have found that i need javascript for about 5% of my mobile browsing, YMMV, i just re-enable it in the few instances i need it

    Restart Netfront and Enjoy

If anyone finds any other settings that help it run faster, smoother, let me know!

Browsing with netfront 3.5 concept version is pure joy, everything renders quickly rivaling the already fast IEM, but it looks so much better. This version does not have flash, but the release version will. Let me know what you guys think

Thanks! for the pointer. It looked great on the video posted on the webpage.

Btw, while downloading, there is no option for Treo 800, which phone model# did you choose?

    Cheers

I picked 700wx, doesn't really matter which one u pick as I believe it all goes to the same file

I have been testing this on wifi, tried browsing with evdo this am, I am still blown away!

I use gmail on the browser. In IE there is a mobile version butit does not appear in this browser. Any idea?

Thanks! Got the 700w version, and the I am very impressed.

So far it has been blazing fast on the wifi connection - evdo is having issues with this phone in Chicago area.

    Some initial issues:
    1. The dpad scrolling is just toooo fast - so fast that it is hard to control and you have gone too far before you stop. Maybe there is a way to configure this speed.
    2. Scrolling with thumb is kind of problemetic. Many times when I touch it to drag and scroll, it goes into the zoom area selection mode.
    3. Haven't yet figured out how to zoom in and out, other than from the menus.

Anyone has a link to the tutorial, video etc?

    Cheers.

Could be because this browser does not send a user-agent that is identified as a mobile device like PIE does.

Gmail app detects my phone as a "KES WS009KE" when using this browser.

This browser is pretty nice. Still greatly prefer PIE and Skyfire over it at the moment. It's kind of annoying not having quick access to a "back" button.

    Update

    Quick "back" button.
    • Press the backspace "arrow" button on the keyboard to go back one page.

You can manually change (nice feature) the User-Agent of the browser.
    • Menu > Tools > Browser Setting > Menu > Network: User-Agent
    • Click on the dropdown arrow and select the "---" space (below NetFront Browser Demo Standard) and press "Edit".
    • Change title to "Portable Internet Explorer" or just "PIE".
    • Erase everything else on the page.
    • Under the User-Agent input box, type in: Treo800w/v0100 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE, PPC; 320x320)
    • Press OK to save.

You should now be able to browse the same mobile formatted sites (m.google.com) as you were on PIE. Remember you can switch back and forth between User-Agents.

Simply press the backspace button on your keyboard to go back

I don't think theres a perfect browser out (yet) for wm6

I use skyfire for media browsing
    PIE for quick browsing
and this as my main browser.

I find pie does not most pages very well, skyfire is nice for watching videos online, but being that its a proxy based browser there is an additional security concern with my passwords.
Skyfire's navigation I also find 'clunky' and theres no copy or paste.
Yes, netfront does take a little while longer to load, but once it loads - you are done and free to browse the entire page.

To each his or her own, I guess - find which browser works for you

I tried this browser for about 10 minutes but it just seemed slow and clunky to me. What about it appeals to you?
  14. #14
Spoke too soon. I updated my previous post with some additional tips.

After tweaking the browser as suggested it's actually very pleasant experience. Being able to switch between mobile and standard mode (via user-agent switch) easily is a very nice feature not present on any other browser that I'm aware of.

It's actually a very pleasant browsing experience once you configure it to your liking.

    Thanks for the link makrotonik!

    thanks for posting...

i have given it a try...
personally, I find browsing on this one(netfront) better THAN on PIE and Opera..

one annoying thing, though... have not been able to figure out how to
disable the security warning on some websites..

Disable "security" warning (switching from http to https):

Menu > Tools > Browser Setting > Menu > Dialog

    Disable "Switch HTTP/HTTPS pages"

That should stop the nag screens you're experiencing.

    update

Here's the NetFront cab and included readme.txt for you guys: http://www.box.net/shared/znuam7do9b
