It almost begs the question of what is the point of questions if you don't already know the answer. Seems you used a lot of "my guess" and "it sounds like" then went on to ask questions that makes it seems you are sure the 800 will fail.

I'm not saying it will or won't.... that is for others to battle... I use a $100 gps that works just grand.... on par with my friend's $300 gps (both seem to use the same maps). lol

Palm surely sees the liability in not allowing you to know where you are when you most need it. To have a unit that won't disclose a known location is a serious error in judgment (it's too aggrevious to be considered an oversight).

I hope they will fix it.

No, but this is a sad replay of the VZW v710 fiasco where the box and specs were different than what they enabled on the phone. This led to class action lawsuits and VZW and Moto shelling out a TON of money when they lost the suit in the form of returned phones, refunded ETFs, and credits.

I dont hate the 800w i have one and i like it. Im choosing to use my Touch over it for various reasons which could EASILY be fixed too hopefully at some point (low call volume, notifications are screwy and you cant see at the top icons for email and voicemail at the same time, etc) but its still a decent keyboard device.

The problem here is Palm had how many years to get this right? Plus, there's no excuse to lie to people. GPS means GPS it doesnt mean SPS (sprint positioning system or what not). GPS implies it works with gps satellites and nothing to do with the sprint network, and nowhere does it disclose gps is network dependent. Personally, I bought this device on the notion it had FULL gps capability, as in when i DO go somewhere like the boonies i wont have to worry or spend more money on a dedicated unit when its in the phone. Now theres no option but to sell it privately and lose money on the whole deal because thats not something you can really "test" in the 30 days unless you purposely leave the service area. I live in South Florida and coverage can be far and inbetween being right by the Everglades (non-existent sprint service in central south Florida tip). Now i dont expect there to be service but if im driving through (say to Tampa in 2 weeks) you damn well bet i want gps always working at find gas and food, especially if i have no cell service. Getting lost in the swamp gator area is less fun than it sounds... So of course i want gps to still work off network i spent money on a gps program to not use Sprint Navigator so i always 100% have directions. This a cut and dry lack of disclosure on Palm's part.

So its not that i hate the phone but, especially as a law student, i dont like seeing people get ripped off either and this is going to lead to a very obvious lawsuit.

Palm states on their website that "GPS not available in all areas at all times. Requires an account and data services at additional cost."

Seems to me that a particular law student I know did not do his or her due diligence when purchasing a device.

I had a vrz 710 during that time. I remember all the remarks about vrz and how they would change. Sht nothing has changed with vrz... lawyers got rich and everything went back to normal.

Seems as you didn't do your due diligence..its been discussed before here that the website changed. When it was first released, it didn't say that about GPS. It mentioned no limitations on the GPS.

There's a difference between doing something "unofficially" (like I suggested above, by leaking software / drivers) vs. Palm / Sprint Level 10 Techs doing something "official" that requires testing or waiting to release in the next version rom. It's easy and simple for Palm to release basic drivers for the GPS chip... so Palm, just do it! "Unofficial" (anonymously leaked) drivers = no liability + it makes us happy campers. There's plenty of GPS software out there... we just need the drivers.

Your phone will work offnetwork. Most of Sprint's plans are "national" plans, so it wouldn't make sense for data to only work in your local region. I don't think they even offer a regional plan anymore.
By boonies, I meant mountains, camp grounds, dessert, and international travel where cellular and data services aren't available. I regularly travel through areas with limited coverage so it's important to maintain standalone and aGPS coverage throughout the entire trip.

Same here, I was surprised to find out that it wasn't a standalone. =\

Well what i meant was more a theory from what someone said that they could use it in data roaming. the theory was that sprint agps server wasnt recognizing a data roaming phone as being a sprint phone or IP so it wasnt allowing gps to initialize. It was more a comment to another poster of a possible answer, Ive never data roamed to try it myself

    Well, send it back...

Far as I've read the website had one listing missing but had agps in another place. I read that thread, never read where it was NEVER mentioned. And if it was and that is important to you, I'd say contact sprint support and send it back or trade for another device that has the capabilities that you need.

yes thats the answer dont like it locked down just send it back... reality is that doesnt solve a problem ever, thats avoiding it. If people just stay quiet and deal with it large corporations will continue to take advantage of the consumer every time. Imagine every phone from now on being locked down to solely network gps, and how much that would suck and people throw a fit. Or worse off they continue to mislead customers by saying one thing and the device is really another. thats a lie no matter how you spin it and illegal marketing.

The real answer here is get the problem fixed either by the community or petition Palm for it.

Oh, I thought you were only complaining at this point... after you said: "this is a dumb oversight by Palm but i dont see them ever addressing" I figured you had given up.

So build the petition! Then I guess we will see how many people have an issue with this.

And to continue to say "someone" lied is a far streatch. Personally, I wish you would send your phone back, I'm about tired of your hyperbole.

But this is a forum, so start the petition or tell us when you will put the team together to fix this issue. At this point we need action instead of continuous complaining of the same thing(s)...

    yes master of the forum

First off, "to petition someone" is used in the sense of to contact them by one or more persons, not write a literal petition which are useless 99.99% of the time. Also "i think they wont fix it" does not imply truth or fact, it implies an opinion of one person. My opinion if something will or wont be fixed has NO bearing on the multi-million dollar company deciding if it will happen. sheesh

And FYI, non-disclosure is the SAME thing as a lie no matter how much you try and defend Palm. Research the term "lie by omission" more.

Second, this thread is 100% about and titled "GPS PROBLEM" if you dont feel theres one then find a different thread to follow instead of demeaning people here who are addressing the thread topic. This is a DISCUSSION of the problem, not a fanboy sell off your phone and shut up thread. And as tired as you are of hyperbole, be it actually on topic, am i tired of hearing you say "sell your phone."

I will continue to discuss the GPS problem topic of this thread as i feel fit and express my views and ideas, dont like it? tough. Mods will do theyre jobs, you do yours and worry about following the forum rules not to harass and insult other members telling people what to say and do or dont do.

i got bars with tomtom 7 but only with gpsgate running. i only recall seeing bars once with garmin xt but i havent used it too much yet. if what you say about agps is true that pisses me off since i thought i was buying a phone with a real gps chip.

Look, be careful about appearing to troll. That is the changed statement from when I bought the device. The spec sheet I have says "standalone GPS."

You seem not to have read the thread and just popped in to say this feature is unimportant, even though palm saw fit to advertise in the top five features, is unimportant.

This is no different than if WiFi were not functioning without a CDMA connection and you were gratuitously popping onto a thread about it and first saying there was a footnote which turned out to be added after, and when corrected saying well "send it back. (which can't be done after 30 days!)

It is a vaporware advertised feature.

I received this reply from Sprint customer care:

"At this time we are aware that GPS is not functioning without a Sprint
signal. As it is supposed to function without a Sprint signal; this is

Good to hear. Although I have a separate BT GPS reciever, which I originally used with my 700wx, I hope to be not reliant on it. Plus it may save the battery with just having the GPS on and the phone radio off.

and as I've already stated, there were instances were palm had the wrong info... in other places they had the right info. If gps was important to you, the person should have performed more research. In addition, if palm lied, you can send the device back. If you want to keep it, offer solutions. Before you start calling someone a troll read wtf they have said. Thanks....

I've more than followed these threads and constant complainers not offering solutions but stating the same things over and over in different threads. Get some posting once saying the device is nice then some who post multiple times about how bad it is... it is ridiculous, at best.

I remember I received one of those for my T7... the item was ever fixed.

Be interesting to see if this gps issue is mentioned on palm's blog or by an official statement from sprint. Good someone at least acknowledged the issue...
