With the rumors swirling, I decided I couldn't take the chance of missing out on the $30/mo plan for SERO. The stars aligned regarding my number-porting issue (mentioned in the CDMA section of the forum), so I placed an order online.

    1) The online port-ability checker, which is wildly innacurate by all reports anyhow, was down. So, the SERO site let me place an order requesting that my old VZW number be ported over.

    2) I ordered the Treo 755p.

Why? Because I have no intention of keeping any phone but an 800w. From my understanding of the phone exchange program, the credit/debit from my account when I do exchange the 755p for an 800w is based off of full retail price, and the 755p is closest in retail price to the anticipated $599 for the 800w.

Also, this gives me plausible deniability if there is even a hint of truth to the rumors that Sprint is trying to prevent 800w purchasers from taking advantage of the current SERO plans instead of the projected doubling in the monthly rates. I'm not exchanging just to get an 800w at the lower rate, but because I don't like PalmOS and want WM.

    3) Soon as the 800w is released, I'll request an exchange. Unless it gets bumped back to August, I'll be within my 30 days.

Now I have to do the same with the wife's number....

Sounds like a solid plan. You don't really need to give them any reason as to why you're exchanging the phone ("I just don't like it" is good enough), but it never hurts to cover all of your bases. The 800w should be available within 10 days so you should have no problem swapping it out when the time comes. And you can port your number over at any time (even beyond the 30 days) so don't even worry about that.

I wonder if you have to wait until the 800w is on the SERO site. There is usually a lag from when a phone is released to when its available on SERO.

Yeah, they could getcha that way: hold the 800w off of SERO till end of July, so the 30-day rule expires.

But, at the end of the day screw the cost of the phone. Locking in that contract price is what is important, especially if sero does morph into the more expensive "everything plus" plans

There's still a risk in everything, it seems...

If it isn't up on the SERO site quickly, I'll work on the in-store exchange angle. From a telesales specialist the other day, I learned that one should be able to do a phone exchange at a Sprint store that is also a "repair/replacement center" or however they are termed on the store locator at sprint.com.

Fortunately, so close to the old Corporate Headquarters (I drive past it on the way to work) there are plenty of Sprint stores here in Northern VA. I'll twist some arms if I have to, but I'd bet I'll get the 800w in exchange without having to talk to a retentions specialist.

Here's hoping I don't have too much hope!

Why not wait to port your number until you are sure that you can do the exchange. Might be a mess to undo the port if it does not work out for you.

No matter what shakes out, I'm done with VZW. They're determined to grab me by the ankles and turn me upside down and shakeshakeshake until every last penny falls out of my pockets. Their plans and fees have just gotten ridiculous.

So, besides thinking this is going to work out smoothly and I'll be another happy SERO customer... if it works out differently, I'll just be porting the number to T-mobile or something, anyway. Half my motivation in all this is to wash the Red off my hands.

I have a friend who was waiting to sign up with SERO once the 800w comes out. After the news yesterday about the SERO prices going up I advised him to do as you are stating and sign up now, then when the 800w comes out do the swap. I have one question though, if he just goes with the cheap free phone now, will Sprint let him exchange it for the 800w for the subsidized price of the 800w, or will the price be more? I can almost see Sprint saying, "Well sir, because you've already used your $150 credit towards the first phone, you are no longer eligible for that discount and the price of the 800w is now $400+." What's the chance they'll do that? Or maybe I should say, what's the Sprint policy in this?

My understanding is that you pay the difference between the full retail price of the two units. So, if he gets a cheap phone that has a full retail price of $299, He'd pay the $300 price difference.

    I may be way wrong.

At any rate, there's only a $20 difference between the 755p and the 800w, so that's why I chose the phone I did.

It sounds like you've really thought this out well. Thanks for sharing your plan. This forum informed me about SERO a couple of years ago. I appreciate the guidance available here.

This is a good idea still. You can return it if the 800w doesn't come out and the plan is still in effect and then get a new one and port to that number.

I had 2 sero lines one for me and one for my wife. I had cancelled my sero a few months back to get a line with at&t because i was so bored with sprints phones. So i call sprint to get the line back (or add a line, didnt care about #) after an hour or so of being hung up on, told i need to go online for sero, etc. I got fed up and was really going to cancel the wifes line and bring her over to at&t (sometimes the cheap plans aren't worth the aggravation). Ok now long story short after another 40 minutes with a retentions rep who tried to have their supervisor get me sero back and couldn't I ended up on an non sero plan (retention) thats even better! So here it goes:

    2 Phone Family Share
    1000 Minutes
    Free after 7
    PCS to PCS
    Unlimited Text
    Unlimited Data

All for $50 + taxes. So essentially i got a sero share plan at $10 cheaper then what i would have gotten if i argued back into sero.

" THE BEST PART..... ITS NOT SERO!!!" .. No more being transfered all over the place or told in store i can't be helped etc. I must say sprint actually made me happy I might even ditch my at&t line and go back to sprint with just one line for myself and wife.

Anyway thanks for listening,, wanted to share my story for anyone else going through the hoops right now.

PS: I got a 700wx for $199 instant and was assured i could exchange in store.

With the Chicken Little talk of a delay from the July 13th release, I was getting a little antsy that they might push it back to the point that I can't pull this switcheroo off. However, I just noticed something in the exchange program description over at Sprint's website.

To paraphrase; you can exchange 30 days from purchase date of something that you haven't activated, but if you do activate, your 30 days start running as of the activation date.

So, by not ripping open the boxes of the 755p Treos for a little while, I can buy a little time in case the sky really is falling on the release date. The phone isn't actually fully activated until I do something with it, right?

Until they provision the phone and you have the capability of making calls on it.

^^;; hate to burst your happy bubble.

while it sounds like a great idea.. the only set back is; They activate your phone (fully) before they even ship it to you (with sero)

My little brother had a problem when he ordered a HTC touch, it was activated the day they mailed it out, and there were many issues with it getting to him.

Took about 2 and a half weeks, rather than the 2 days))

long story short, after only 2 (two) weeks of use, he diecided the keyboard-less shape wasn't right for him...

so he wanted to switch it out; been a week and a half, thats fine right?

    Wrong.

his phone just went past the 30 day limit in their book....

and in the end he was stuck with it.

    ------------------------------------------------------

You can even test this out yourself, when i ordered a sero plan they gave me my phone number before i received the phone. (this may have changed after sprint took over the sero site last year)

anyways, Try calling that number and leave youself a voice mail.

if you have your voice mail in your inbox when you turn on your brand knew beauty, you can bet it was activated that whole time.

Hmmm. Looking at my order status, it does say that the phone was "shipped and activated" on the webpage. Poopies. Guess Sprint better not drag their feet on this release, then!

Stinks to hear what happened to your brother. Did he roll over quickly? I would think that if you made a big enough stink about the "I've had the phone to use for less than two weeks!" issue, a retentions rep would let you do the exchange.

:-/ well he tried to give a good fight, but they were very stern about their policies.

In the end he did get an extra 50$ off his bill... but yeh.. O.o woopty doo?

So Ministr . . . did you try to exchange/swap yet?
  19. #19
I ordered a Centro on 7/10 to get in on the $30/mo plan before it went away. My Centro is scheduled for delivery sometime later today, however, I have already switched to the 800w before even getting the Centro.

I bought the 800 locally at full retail price on Sat, did an ESN swap online, called to activate on the phone # they had assigned to my Centro, then ported my old # over to Sprint. All of this happened (amazingly) fast and without a glitch -- whole process took less than 30min.

Downside: I will wind up paying $50 more when all is said and done ($299 vs $249)
Upside: No hassles with return kits, etc, etc (I'll just reject the Centro pkg when UPS comes)

Nice. Glad to hear it was relatively painless.

I took a similar path last week to get the old SERO plan (phew!) . . . got a Mogul. I called a local store this morning to ask about exchanging, although I didn't mention that I had SERO. The person that I spoke to said that I could exchange in-store as long as I had a receipt that showed what I had paid for the first phone. I can't remember what all came in the package last week, but I'm hoping that the needed info is in there. I also hope that that they don't tell me that since it's SERO, I have to exchange via mail (as I've read elsewhere is the requirement).
