Well I have a new laptop, a Thinkpad T61 which is running Vista Premium, I'm not all too familiar with it, but I do know that its no longer ActiveSync anymore. I also have never setup my Treo 750 to tether to anything before. Its running WM6 with the 2.27 unbranded ROM. So what program do I use for syncing my device, because all I care about are my mobile favorites and a shared files folder (at least that's what I would use in ActiveSync) and then I also want to be able to use my 750's unlimited plan to check my email, etc. when I am away from a hotspot or in the car traveling.

Do I need to disable the AT&T Proxy, run any kind of 3rd party app, and so on. I don't want to use cables (unless I have to) since both the laptop and the phone have BT i assumed I could use BT to act as my laptop's modem.

Any and all tutorials/help would be appreciated

You still use ActiveSync with Vista. That's what I'm doing. I don't know about the BT stuff though, I use Internet Sharing with a USB cable - it has the added benefit of charging my phone while surfing.

Ahh, never thought of it that way, it would be a good idea if my phone battery was low to use the cable, but if not I just wonder if it will work with BT. ActiveSync still? Maybe you can use it, but I thought there was something like mobile device center or was I just reading about the wrong app in the forums here?

Vista moved away from ActiveSync and uses Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) for syncing.

Either way, internet sharing works the same on either OS. Just plug in the device, fire up the Internet Sharing application, and click "connect". That's it.

If you want to do it via BT, then fire up Internet Sharing, choose BT as the connection type, and click connect. Then on the PC, open up BT and choose "connect to BT PAN" (personal area network).

Pretty straightforward. I do agree that the cable it better though. You're not limited by BT speeds, plus running HSDPA and BT radio at the same time is a serious battery killer. Charge while you surf is a much better option.

Now do I have to change anything with the AT&T Proxy (on or off) or anything else so it doesnt look like I'm tethering to a laptop or can that not be detected? I have the PDA unlimited plan which is like $35\mo.

Data is data. Keep your usage under 5GB a month, as that is where they cap tether data plans.

Also, if you have an older unlimited data plan that you signed on for before they came out with these tether plans, chances are your contract verbiage makes no distinction between tethered/non-tethered data.

I wouldn't sweat it then Shucky. I'm like you, on an older plan and only use it occasionally (usually to handle a quick work issue). Never had a problem and I bet I never will.

Doesn't matter. The "proxy manager" program just affects whether Pocket IE goest through the proxy or not.

If you're talking about the internet sharing network selection, it still doesn't matter. Just pick whichever one will connect. Sometimes I have to pick AT&T, sometimes I have to pick proxy. No clue why, but one of them always works.
