Treo 850 has WiFi, full specs leaked
    By Tam Hanna
The folks at The Boy Genius Report managed to get a snapshot of the 850 - we at TamsPPC now have the full specs of the upcoming Treo 8850 due to a good friend of mine working at Palm’s(who recently got his box).

He describes the box as following:

This is not the PalmOS version of the Centro.

It can be regarded as the evolution of the 750 line of devices. The unit is a little wider, but much slimmer than the Centro, it’s 175 MB for user), 32 MB SDRAM and Windows Mobile Pro 6.1.

The Codename for this unit was “Skywriter”

Anyways, here are the full specs:

14 mm in thickness, width 60 mm and length 113 mm
GSM, EDGE and UMTS HSDPA 3.6
    assisted-GPS receiver
    Wi-FI b/g
    320*320 screen, touch panel
    micro-SD slot under the battery
    2 MP camera
    1500 mAh battery
a micro-USB connector for both power and sync
    bluetooth 2.0 EDR + A2DP, 256 MB NAND-Flash (> 175 MB for user), 32 MB SDRAM
    Windows Mobile Pro 6.1.
I am especially happy to hear that Palm finally managed to give the Treo 850 WiFi and a MiniUSB port - farewell, Athena Connector. While this may be annoying for all who currently own such devices; people who travel a lot and carry many gadgets will be happy to hear that they now need one charger/cable less.

As for the rest - nothing too interesting here. Enjoy!

There's one thing very worrying here. 32MB SDRAM? Now this may very well be 32MB SDRAM free, but that would mean 64 MB SDRAM vs 128MB, which would be a major minus point for this attractive device. I would refuse to buy a 64MB device these days. WM 6.1 almost demands as much.

It's 175MB free, not 32MB. There are a number of typos in that post and I would guess than the 32MB is supposed to read 32GB of internal flash storage for things like music files.

    How credible is that site?

Think I might agree with the other poster here....

Anyway, until something comes from one of our solid sites (maybe even palm), I'd not put too much credence in posts on the net. I think if anyone gets the specs it will be shadow or BG.

Tam is pretty reliable, so I wouldn't doubt the overall specs.

But yeah, I question the "32mb" too. Just doesn't sound right.

Awesome! Thanks for the post, Mal (and yours, Surur). The size is very similar to the 700wx, but about half as thick. Looks like the only thing it has in common with the Centro is the rubbery keyboard, and I can live with that aspect. Great finds. I just hope the memory isn't crippled initially as was the 700W when it first arrived.

Edit to add: Ugh, I just caught this "micro-sd slot under the battery." I don't like that aspect of my Centro. The Centro battery cover is a pain to slide on and off. At least we won't have to use Card Export II to access the card, but Active Sync is incredibly slow for transferring large files.

    How about 32 GB? ::ROFL::

Thanks... I've not heard of the site... will be interesting to hear some official specs... see if palm is on the ball with "one of the most important releases they will have this year." (Outside of the treo 800, obviously.)

Try reading my post. 175MB free to the user. 32GB of internal storage is a possibility since the 3g iPhone is coming out soon with a 32GB option.

Its not possible because its Palm. Thats like expecting Bolivia to land some-one on the moon, just because the US did it.

However, unlike Apple, Palm did actually ship a device only with 32 MB SDRAM...

There is no way Palm will put 32gig on the phone. It will not make economic sense. The cost is too high. It makes sense for iphone to have 32g, many people want to store videos, music, and pictures on phone, 32g may not be enough for some users.

    Agree....

iTunes is a huge motivator for 32 GB, if not more.

I'm assuming that the 32mb of RAM is a big typo from the source - WM6 needs at least 64mb of RAM not to fall on its face, and 128mb for a competent device. If Palm makes another 700w mistake, then its all over for them. My assumption - 128mb RAM.

This comment is actually very telling. When I first looked at NSX's post, I thought the same thing: Ha! no way.

Then I thought about it some more... Really, what we've all so deeply come to accept that such an idea seems absurd is:

Ha! No way would Palm do something that awesome and with the times

Come on Palm. Posts like this should tell you that deep down even your loudest supporters are starting to think of you as an also-ran.

Are you missing the whole "256MB RAM with 175MB free to the user" part of the specs?

Thats Flash storage, NAND as the spec says. I have no doubt the device has a 256 MB ROM, but I am concerned it may have 64MB SDRAM, which would be a disaster.

However previously leaked specs said there was 100 MB SDRAM free, so its likely 128 MB in total, which would thankfully be industry standard.

Given the number of typos in the the first post, it's tough to tell what to believe.

Why would they use 256MB of ROM and leave 175MB free? That makes no sense. 256MB of RAM with 175MB free does make sense. 128MB is the minimum (HTC Touch) and 256MB makes sense.

No chance that 128MB of total RAM leaves 100MB free.

I believe Palm learned the lesson from 700w and HTC. My speculation is 128MB. The 100MB free memory is possible, because the WM6.1 may not use a lot of resources compare to WM6.0 (save more power). Besides, Palm will customize the ROM to elimate some programs to speed up the device. This is what Palm did in the last few models.

I am happy to know that the battery is 1500mAh compare to 1200mAh in my Treo 750. If the WM6.1 can effective handle the battery life, I do expect the Treo 850 can provide 50% more power compare to Treo 750.

For the Centro like keyboard, I am currently using Centro and Treo 750. I found that both keyboards are working fine with me but still cannot imagine the typing experience with a big Centro keyboard.

Um, that's what's reported for the 800w actually: 800w: Updated Specs and features
    • ~100mb of Program Memory (after OS)/ ~170mb of Storage Memory (after OS)

(and I'm very confident in those numbers)

Point of reference: the 700wx has 64 MB built-in RAM, with about 40mb user available after the OS boots (~24mb for OS).

It's not only possible, but very likely. That's the "Palm tweaks" we all talk about in action. They rip out a lot of WM overhead which in turn makes the OS more lean.

I don't think 32 GB on a Treo would be awesome at all. The only reason most users would need 32 GB on a phone is for video, and video on a little square screen is basically a bit crap. 32 GB flash would be little bang but big bucks.
